Movies for free at the theater dispute

Look...just simply walk in, right passed the ticket taker. What's he going to do, ask you for your ticket? At which point you say firmly  "I've already given you my ticket"....He's either a teenager or a retard and doesn't care. I've even stopped to ask which movie theater i was looking for.

  I don't do it but maybe twice a year if that. I also always bring a soft cooler full of beer to enjoy.

  This kid I know downloads movie's and music for free, (he has probably over a terabyte worth) then passes them all on to his friends. He has an ethical issue with me walking in. He says that there are levels of thievery and that my level is far worse than his.

I think he's lost his fucking mind!

  Either way I never do this in a packed theater or busy night because I don't like the idea that I'm taking a paying customers seat. Also I show up just as the movie is beginning so that all the paying patrons are most likely  there already.

Arguably, you're not stealing any more than he is, because neither of you are depriving anyone else from seeing the movie. But the way you do it involves deception or lying, which seems worse than just clicking on a torrent link. That's probably what makes him uncomfortable.

That's what he said too..I disagree that he should feel righteous just because no one can see his underhanded, hiding behind a computer, stealing dozens of times over the amount I am.

The only difference is that he doesn't have the balls to do it in person. Not that it even takes balls. It just irks me because he's so adamant about it.

His issue is that I'm actually stealing a service, and thus hurting the industry more so than he is.

I dont think there is anything wrong with sneaking into a movie every now and again. We used to have a friend go in to the movie (he payed) then he walked through to the exit door, opened it and let the entire group in.

Your's is obviously worse (per incident) because you're stealing intellectual property AND the electricty, air conditioning, nice seating, expensive viewing equipment, labor, rent.  I mean come on, there's a reason it costs 10 bucks to see a movie.  Not to mention his intellectual property is of a decidedly inferior quality.

That's a good point. When you download a movie you don't get the same experience as you do when going to the cinema.

I think it is worse to walk in without buying a ticket, than it is to download a movie.

IMO sneaking into a movie is ok for a teenager, but once you become an adult, time to start paying for stuff, and acting responsible:shrug:

What about all the money, time, and expensive equipment that went into making the movie? Downloading movies is on the same level as sneaking into one. The theater would be running the electricity/equipment and all anyways. So, as long as he isn't depriving someone who paid of a seat, then it wouldn't weigh on my conscience. All that being said, ive never snuck into a movie but i've downloaded more pirated movies then i can remember.
Information should be free anyway. By ANY means!

pay $20.00 a month for 3 at a time unlimited DVD's mailed to me, why d/l?

Actually, if you want to nitpick, you're not actually paying for the movie, you're paying for admission to the building :thumbup:

If you're reffering to theaters that have the box office inside the lobby (they're outside at all the theaters I've seen), then you're paying for admission to the inner part of the building.

I don't see how you can have a problem with my argument.

Both people are stealing intellectual property, so they're tied in that regard at best.

The latter is trespassing as well.  Ya, ok, the stuff is running anyways, but you're getting the much better experience that you should be paying for all the extras.  So you're still "stealing" that as well.  There's no semantics that can avoid that.

I'm not trying to single anyone out, but seriously, like I mentioned I'm going on 'off nights'. So, in other words, I am occupying an otherwise unoccupied seat. So, how am I effecting anyone? The whole issue is about the levels of thievery.

Is there different levels of thievery?

So say I steal a $5,000 car and he steals a $100,000 car. Whose crime is worse? Legitimately, both people are effected the same. But on a more personal level, the guy that lost the $5,000 car may and probably is effected more because the guy that bought the $100,000 can obviously afford it; due to the fact that he spent $100,000  on the car.

How can you put a price on the act of thievery?

A thief is a thief is a thief.

well if you were actually buying popcorn and drinks i wouldn't feel you were doing any harm.  but it sounds like you rbring your own consumpsions.

personaly i think its bullshit to have to pay for a movie more than once, once at the theator then rent it then buy it then buy it again because a new stupid format came out its all just stealing...

Until they start selling alcoholic beverages I will continue to bring my own 'consumptions' as it were. Now,  lets take this to the next level, from here on out, I will be ordering the extra large popcorn bucket, but without the popcorn, you want to know why? So I can piss in it and not miss ANY of the movie.

But, I fully agree. It's all about how they can squeeze another dollar out of the consumer. That's where I'm okay about watching a movie here and there and not paying for it.

*looks around*  well i guess your right i don't see any guns pointed at me.  however i must convey a bit of knowledge to you.  the world has been shaped around us, the world has been stripped of things that allow one to enjoy life, while other things have been "regulated" to a point where you can not do anything outside the house without a permit or license or money.  unless you like sitting in a chair or walking your imaginary dog.

so in that effect i am being forced to implore entertainment.  along with being trained/becoming addicted to the stuff.
