ID request

My friend found these in his yard, and described them to me over the phone, and I thought they were going to end up being Amanita muscaria, but he took a picture with his camera phone, and this is what they look like...



Habitat: mulch

Weather leading up to find: rain for the past two days

Location: Western Pennsylvania

Spore print: my friend didn't take one, and I don't think he will go through the trouble to get one since I told him it is not an active mushroom after seeing the picture.

It looks pretty distinct, so I wouldn't imagine it would be hard to ID, anyone want to help me figure this one out?

No, never.  I've not found them, I think they are really rare on the west coast.  Beautiful mushrooms though.

I hear they are excellent edibles.

I'm 100% sure that that is what they are, but good practice would be to at least look the species up and compare other photos so you are equally certain before you eat it.  :smile:

already done! as soon as you gave me the species name I looked it up on mushroom expert, and I am going to print them before eating them as well. :thumbup:
