Anyone good with computers?
    #8583057 -

Does anyone know how i can find out what kind of graphics cards will fit my computer (like a website that can scan it?), and how I can tell graphics cards will fit my computer just by reading the specs?

The graphics card I have that fits my computer has a single slit where it slides into the computer like this one does

I would google my motherboard and see what is compatible with it.
It will tell you what type of video card is compatible. Then google the type of video card you have, and figure out what type it is.

For example, google, Asus motherboard x
Then google, Nvidia x

Heres some information on my computer from gateways site.

Quote:
Memory Upgrade Information for the Gateway Essex Motherboards
The two Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) slots are keyed to insure proper insertion. The BIOS automatically detects memory type, size, and speed. Gateway and Intel have qualified this motherboard for a total of one gigabyte (GB) of DDR SDRAM memory. Each memory module

Memory features

2.5-volt (V) only, 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMMs with gold-plated contacts
Unbuffered single-sided or double-sided DIMMs
Minimum memory: 64 megabytes (MB)
200/266-megahertz (MHz) DDR SDRAM DIMMs
Serial Presence Detect (SPD)
Suspend to RAM
Unbuffered non-ECC DIMMs only
128-mbit and 256-mbit technology is supported

Well...you could always take out your graphics card, look at the slot, then compare it to the one you want to get.

Not very helpful, I know .__.

Any particular reason you are looking to upgrade? For Spore maybe?

I'm not a hardware man...if you ever have troubles with a home network, thats when I can help you out.

My graphics card I have now is bad. I have one that fits in it but isnt in the computer, gateway made it have some kind of built in video card that isnt removable, along with an extra slot if you want to upgrade ur video card.

I found some more information on my motherboard.

Quote:
The accelerated graphics port (AGP) 1.5-volt (V) switching voltage level (SVL) slot provides a dedicated high-speed bus with the 84510G memory controller hub (MCH). This motherboard supports AGP 4X. When an AGP video card is placed in the slot, it automatically overrides the integrated video on the AGP bus.

This AGP slot also has an integrated AGP card retention mechanism. To release the AGP card, squeeze the tabs together and remove the card.

The AGP slot has the following features:

    * Pipelined memory read and write operations that hide memory access latency
    * Demultiplexing of address and data on the bus for nearly 100 percent efficiency

Note: The motherboard does not support legacy AGP cards using the 3.3-V specification. Use of these cards prevents the computer from starting.

Hi man it's a PCI-E Graphics card so any new type of card will fit eg. Nvida 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800, 9600, 9800

or ATI but not sure of the ATI modles not a fan of Ati cards

hope this helps

Ah. Thats what I have...the on board graphics. At least you have that expansion port. I have to buy a new PC to upgrade. .__.

I see that Ozzy there answered your question, so best of luck to you.

(if you DO decide to play Spore, let me know! I'll be playing too!)

The PC is an 02. Does agp and pci-e have anything to do with eachother (i have no idea what either one of them are)? It says

Is pci-e a type of card that fits into apg slots or something?

Your just answered your own question man.

If the main board says AGP then it's an AGP Card and will only take AGP most AGP cards have three solts not two which is strange but if thats the case quickly run it down to a local computer shop and they tell you what it is.

also being an 02 mainboard it's more then likly AGP so to confuse.

best place to find a card once you have find out 100% is on ebay because apg is getting harder and harder to get and shops will charge more then they should for them

Your other post kind of confused me, are agp and pci-e different cards? Also if my motherboard supports AGP 4x, will it run a 8x? Like this one for example http://www.pny.com/products/verto/mainstream/6600agp8x256.asp.

PCI E is NOT AGP.

If your computer supports AGP 4x and you get a 8x I can't guarantee it will work. It probably will, but it won't run at 8x speeds.

Nope. It takes AGP cards. PCI-e, or the older PCI will not fit.

And it's 4x. My reccomendation for you would be to get an nvidia FX5200 AGP card. It's about £20 and the improvement will be significant over your inbuilt/onboard graphics.

It'll also free up system memory as you're not using that for the onboard graphics chip.

Though it takes AGP cards, it should still have a free PCI slot open as well, if it's proprietary they usually give you like 2-3 extras.

It's better he sticks to AGP. 8x cards will automatically (usually!) ramp down to 4x if that's the fastest the slot will go. The speed margin between 4 and 8x is nearly indistinguishable, as the graphics cards at the time were barely pushing that much data around.

PCI, the old PCI bus had a total bandwidth of 133mb/sec, that has to be shared with all PCI devices. If you have a graphics card there, there's hardly any bandwidth for anything else. AGP is a seperate bus. I can't remember the bandwidth limits on it though.

Ya biggest concern for a 4xagp mobo is not buying some nice 8x agp card thats only gonna run at half (4x). I did this on  accident like 6yrs ago. Back then i didnt know there was a difference in agp. Took me like 2 days on tech support to ati canada for them to figure out it was a 4x mobo with an 8x card. Not sure who was being stupider there, lol, me: the young comp noob or ATI tech support. Seems an obvious answer lol.

4xAGP < 8xAGP < PCI-E (16x)

I took your advice and got one of these
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=FX5200-TD128LF&class=vga

For 25 shipped off ebay.

I hope it works in my pc

Good stuff.

There's faster AGP cards out there, but for your system spec, you wouldn't notice it.

Btw, my sister's computer is a 2.6ghz p4 with a geforce3 TI500 I swappwed for a TNT2 (Guy I swapped it with was looking for a TNT2 for a testing platform). The graphics card is 8x, running at 4x. It plays UT2k4 fine.

The game im wanting to run says this

Minimum req
ATI Radeon 8500 or GeForce 3 or 4 MX series card with 32mb of VRAM

Reccomended Req
ATI Radeon 9000 or GeForce 4 Ti Series Video Card with 64mb of VRAM

I couldnt find out how much VRAM the chip I bought has. Any idea? My current gcard runs it decently but i do have the game shutdown due to the gcard (Doesnt happen too often), and also it has a low FPS, and I cant goto parts of the world due to my gcard.
