ID request - North England

Hi all,

Hope everyone is well. If anyone could help me out, it would be most appreciated.

Just the one species.

Habitat: Wood - Growing from soil among bluebells. Pine tree close by.

Gills: (to be confirmed - will go back and pick it tomorrow)

Stem: Light brown to yellow to white as you move up the stem. Fragile.

Cap: Brown. 2cm (just under 1 inch) in diameter (to be confirmed - will go back and pick it tomorrow)

Spore print color: Will do one

Bruising: Will check

Location: Cumbria, England

we gonna need more information for instance , spore print and gill color , but after lokking the picture i have come to this ideas , collybya some have the stem just lie that , marasmius, or something white spored .

Just been into the woods and picked it. Gills are white and I have set off the spore colour process.

Interesting stuff this mushroom identification lark. It would be nice to have at least a basic knowledge.

Kudos on the ID request! I don't recognize your mushroom, but I'm sure Alan or one of the other resident geniuses can take a pretty definite stab.

I would be steering clear of that one until it's properly identified. The combination of the dark brown cap colour and the yellowing of the stem are bad signs for my untrained eyes.

The spore print is white.

I include a photo of the gills (white) and the spore print. Not sure if you'll get much from the photos, but worth a try. I put it on macro. Probably just my camera skills (or lack of them)

Looks like a light yellow print. I think Cactu's guess of Collybia is good, although its probably wrong. I have nothing better to suggest. Those little light spored things are confusing.

It would be possible to look at the pileipellis under a microscope and narrow it down to various families that way, but for now lets just say that its not psychoactive or edible and has a really long twisted name. Knowing the name wouldn't help much but you would learn quite a lot in the process of finding it out.

You could also try posting it on http://mushroomobserver.org. If you don't put a name in people can vote on its ID. The people that do the voting over there are really good at ID'ing random things from the forest.

I considered mycena, but it somehow doesn't seem right. I'd lean towards collybia, although I'm essentially with Alan; they might as well be something completely different. We'll never know, I guess.

Although the page does not say if it is edible (or magic!). I googled 'Macrocystidia cuccumis' but couldn't find much more out about it. Could it be known by a different name?

The reason you are not finding much online is that it is actually spelled Macrocystidia cucumis.

I really should have known this one, Fakhface taught it to us last year.  He finds it in Germany all the time, its very widely distributed.
