One Dead Album?

What would it be? Why?

I am a huge Tool/Doors/Floyd person, I dabble in a lot of other stuff, but never really gave the Dead a full listen through.

Where should I start?

There is no one Dead album because they changed so much over the years - but I say, go DL 5/8/77 Barton Hall off the internet archive (archive.org) as a good starting point.

I had one GD album and that was enough.  I saw them in concert the year before Jerry died and that was enough.

You could try Limewire and check on the most popular songs that are available.  At least that would give you an idea of what other people like.  Musically, I think the Dead are popular because of the experience of the music.  It's only about half of the music itself, imo.

I listen to 5/8/77 regularly and give out copies of this show to people. It's possibly my favorite Scarlet > Fire > Estimated Profit ever. Definately my favorite Estimated ever. I will leave the second disk in for days at a time hearing something new everyday.

You can't just download a songs here and there to grasp the dead. For a new listener it's about grabbing an entire show and listening to it all the way. You either get it or don't. love it or hate it kinda thing. But your right, listening to any album or show will never give your the amazing feeling of the dead. The closest thing you can get to Grateful Dead is Dark Star Orchestra. Absolutely amazing. They take the dead's music very seriously and the really create the that living organism of the band, the crowd, and the music that the Dead did for years. Granted, they are only a taste of the boys could put together in a single night. No less, they are an absolutely amazing band.

To the original poster:

The first dead album I bought was a Rockin the Rein with the Grateful Dead. It's still one of my favorites. The Dark Star is absolutely mind melting. Anything from the Europe 72 tour is outstanding IMO.

The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack is another fantastic commercial release. It's a 5 disk box set, and has my favorite version of Weather Reports Suite. It's the sound that sings to my soul. Anything from the Fillmores is going to be kick ass, aswell as the Winterland Arena. In the last perfomance of one of the fillmore's(I can't remember which one east or west) but the commercial release Ladies and Gentleman The Grateful Dead, Jerry unleashed some of the most emotional guitar playing with more soul than anyone could pour into it. It's been said he was crying during Not Fade Away > Going Down the Road Feeling bad. As this was last perfomance in Bill Graham's famous Fillmore. You can clearly hear the sadness in the guitar and voice. It gives me goose bumps everytime I listen to it. Extremely poweful music.

Going to another era of the dead, check out 7/18/89 Alpine Valley. Brent does a kick ass Dear Mr. Fantasy, and the Bird Song will put a corkscrew in my brain everytime. I saw Dark Star Orchestra perform this show this past winter and I flash back to extremely powerful dose I took that night everytime. The eyes of the world brings you back to earth just as right moment. This is definately one sure I burn over and over to give away just so people can hear the powerful music.

Dude check out Live/Dead for one kick ass album in 1969, or Live at the Filmore East, also 1969.

I have that album as well. That was the second the Dead album I ever bought. Amazing upbeat Dark Star and St. Stephens. I'm glad you mentioned that one because it's a good one to own. My only problem with it, is it's one disk. Not enough music! I love the 10 minute love light.
