Teacher Freshwater burns crosses into students' arms

John Freshwater, a teacher at Mount Vernon Middle School, has been teaching creationism in his science class and, on at least one occasion, used a device to burn the image of a cross on students' arms. He has also been accused of being insubordinate by fellow teachers and administrators for failing to remove a Bible and other religious materials from his science classroom and for preaching his Christian beliefs in class, despite complaints by the teachers. And in what can only be described as an act devoid of any use of common sense and sensitivity, Freshwater used a science tool called a "high frequency generator" to burn the image of a cross onto the arms of several students. And, although Freshwater told investigators the image was that of an "x" and not a cross, and that he was only trying to demonstrate the machine to his students, it is perfectly clear that the image is that of a cross.

"I keep the Bible on my desk for daily inspiration and to help me get through the day," Freshwater explained.



At least Freshwater upheld his Christian beliefs by lying about the 'X' not being a cross. :rolleyes:

My take:

Bible on desk is fine.


Teaching creationism is fine as long as its not indoctrination, i.e. students are allowed to debate and question his opinions and he does not require personal subscription to the beliefs.  I also think the kids shouldn't have to be graded on it if its not part of a recognized curiculum that the teacher is bound to follow.


Burning the cross was stupid, but I don't think anything's wrong with it IF the kid consented to it.


Legally it is a poor decision, but morally, if the kid was fine with it, I  am too.  We need to stop treating kids like they're not sentient beings and allow them to make choices of trivial consequence such as this.


What was this device though?  Was it just a burn?

This smacks of the superiority complex some atheists seem to have, pretty shitty prejudice if you ask me.

THe guy shouldn't be burning things into people's arms unwillingly, but if they consented, I see nothing amounting to discipline.

If the parents object, he shouldn't do it any more, but if their kids consented the parents shoudl but the fuck out.


This is why college is so much better than the lower schools in my experience: you get the fucking parents and moral panickers out of shit and are able to have open discussions and not concentrate so much on making the school a jail or making it align with the prevailing attitudes/prejudices of the stupid ass parents.
