Using the logic 'they are using oil  more than I am' doesn't make it any more justified to drive a car excessively.

whose they,the rich and powerful?

id be fine using only one car per family like we do and its a 6 cylinder,id even use a 4 cylinder but it doesnt really make a difference

do you think the filthy rich will give up flying around everywhere for 2 day getaways and interstate  bullshit spinning power lunches over our heads or their 8 cylinder holiday suvs or monster trucks, nascar, or even the millionaires sport called formula one racing?

i dont think so...

the jumbo jets you were referring to.

Edit: and no I do not think that they will stop. That is exactly what I mean by my statement you quoted though. Their actions should have no effect on yours.

I see 'driving the fuck out of' and 'using only for family oriented necessities' as two very different things. You can certainly see where my confusion stemmed from, yes? :o

All good points.  However, given the nature of people in general, and Americans in particular, I do not think we will be as likely to "snap out of it" as some will find creative, even illegal, methods of getting the conveniences they have become used to.

My prediction parallels Visionary Tools': a Dark Age perhaps unparalleled to anything we have known by experience.

Those who employ illegal and unsustainable ways of perpetuating their lifestyle will only experience the same unsatisfactory lifestyle with greater costs than they are used to.  They just haven't reached their own personal catharsis yet.  Let them struggle, while others improve their situation by adopting healthier habits and values.

Whether the age to come is dark or light depends on your perspective and your values.  If a shift towards necessities and away from amenities spells dark times for you, then that's what you will experience.

As food prices rise, as they most assuredly will, given the rising costs of fuel, North Americans will be far more interested in putting food on the table than worrying about other citizens of the world, imo.

I think that's wonderful.  They will better appreciate the necessities of life, and understand how needless the luxuries are.  North Americans don't genuinely give a shit about foreign plight anyway, and won't until they can experience the same difficulties.

Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man.  For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire.  Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it.

Spot on. That's exactly why I am in favor of the price hike. To the people that think I fear a higher cost of living, I laugh, I embrace it. Stop letting prices control your life and start embracing self sustainability.

You're all fools. You can take your moral smugness and shove it up your arses. It won't feed you when fuel becomes a luxury item.

Where's the alternatives? Even if the information is declassified, and oil companies stop buying up alternative energy systems that run on water, what are you going to do about roads?

Just for once I'd like to see some other geologist back me up here on methane condensation. Oil is not a limited resource. Oil fields replenish themselves. Coal is a finite resource. Uranium is a finite resource. None of the auxilliary energy infastructure is in place. And it won't be. No micro energy generation. That'd give people liberty and freedom. And unless you've been living in a cave the past millenia, governments are not hot on liberty and freedom.

I totally agree.

I agree to a point.  The Dark Age I was referring to was the one where some who cannot make the shift break into my home to rob me blind to perpetuate their lifestyle.  I wasn't referring to a lack of convenience.  I've lived quite comfortably without electricity, running water, television or a phone.

Perhaps.  However, I used to think a lot of things would wake people up only to find they go back to sleep too easily or never wake up at all.  I will say that hard times can create tougher people.  Hopefully, these days will cause people to think about what they have and appreciate it, and life, all the more.

I want to see people running on water, using it as a fuel. I wanted to see Tesla's radiant energy being used worldwide, electricity free for anyone with the antennae to pick it up. But the powers that be shut it down. We have oil, or we have nothing.

That stuff doesn't work.

How do you know? Saying things like that without any supporting evidence, you may as well not say anything about it at all. I'm guessing you were the debate team captain?

You live in the city obviously. In rural America (You know, where we make the food for y'all?) cars are how you get the 50 or 60 miles to town once a week.

Erm, you know the energy still has to come from somewhere? Like coal, or nuclear. Tesla's energy distribution idea has nothing to do with dependence on oil.
