Absinthe Culture

I recently discovered that there's a quite sizeable revival of absinthe culture going on in my city. The partakers are varied, but it all seems most closely associated with the local music scene, college students (mostly graduate), and the bohemian circles.

As for the absinthe, it isn't that vodka + anise + green coloring bullshit, but real privately distilled Green Fairy, and in some cases, imported $100+ bottles of European (mostly French and Czech).

Anyway, I'm just curious if anyone else has seen a recent resurgence in absinthe drinking in their area.

I once did a tek I found on the internet to make Absinthe out of wormwood and some other stuff. I pretty much :projectile: for the rest of the evening.

Isn't absinthe illegal in the States?

I heard the Wurmwood really doesn't make you hallucinate, and it was just fabrication done on the part of prohibitionists and whiskey distillers alike to get absinthe banned.

The human imagination is capable of crazy things though, so if one was to think it held this power, who knows. :tongue:

I had some while partying with friends in Lithuania last summer.  I would agree that there is no hallucination, just a vile licorice tasting drink that gets you so fucked up you cant stop puking.  I dont liek drinking that much at all in the first place, but I still think there is really nothing special about absinthe

the herbs are mildly psychoactive... not hallucinogenic, but there's a clear difference in effect between absinthe and other alcohol. also, if you take if for several days on end, you can start to feel slightly delirious... again, no hallucinations, but altered perception / thought patterns for sure. at least, that's been my experience with it.

It might alter your perception/thought patterns differently than other alcohols; I was rather wasted when I tried it and afterwards I was just destroyed and could barely walk balk to my friends apartment.  Its some strong stuff for sure, but not hallucinogenic in the way that most people think it is, in my opinion at least

No, the only real difference is that absinthe leaves you a little more clear headed while you're rip-roaringly drunk.

I distill my own Absinthes using old recipies from the Belle Epoque.

Czech "absinth" is NOT Absinthe, its not even close. Most are absolutely ghastly, some are tasty.. to some.. but absinthe it is not.

Check out my Absinthe buyer's guide & preparation advice for a reasonable introduction, and not in the last place, brand names that rock. Also check out the video on how to prepare a glass of Absinthe, voice over by a commercial Absinthe distiller with a humongous accent :grin:

Yes theres a big absinthe revival, but its not all good.

Most new absintheurs buy the WRONG Absinthe, they prepare it the WRONG way or even drink it neat and then decide its not for them.

Absinthe can be quite a connaisseurs experience, you got to do it right though. If you do, and drink in moderation, I can highly recommend it :thumbup:

Its delicious in flavor, a really good aperitiv.

As to effects, really getting more drunk with a slightly clearer head is all there is to it.

Don't buy a $150 bottle of Jade PF 1901 expecting cosmic revelations. If you want to trip, buy LSD, if you want a superb liquor, buy a quality absinthe.

If you want to get drunk, have one or two glasses of absinthe and then bring in your booze of choice afterward.

edit -- also, I'm not saying that a revival in absinthe drinking itself is noteworthy... what really struck me was an apparent revival in the culture that surrounded it, harking back to Bizet and others.

This is only partly true. The Czechs started the modern absinthe revival and there are some nasty brands, but there are also some good ones - Absinthe St Antoine, Tolouse Lautrec and a whole bunch of others. What you are talking about is the Prague "made for tourists" brands which also appear online.

Absinth is the German spelling of absinthe and usually has a lower anise content and often a higher thujone content. This is due to the maceration (pre and post distillation) of artemisia absinthium.

Setting fire to absinthe soaked sugar cubes adds a caramel taste, but it is a modern invention I agree.

I like: Roquette 1797,Century Absinthe(100mg thujone) and also some of the more obscure La Bleues, which can only be got if you know who to ask and have upto 70mg thujone.

Avoid Lucid - it is a rubbish made for America supermarket brand. The best brand in the USA is the newly arrived Sirene or the eccentric St George from San Fransisco.

I've never had some but if I had a credit card, I'd like to order some online. I can see me now in a smoking jacket, a Cruella de Vil-type cigarette, stacks of dust-covered books behind me, and a beautiful lady enjoying it with me.


In all actuality, it'd probably just be me and my 2 friends getting smashed at one of their apartments, lol.

My personal recommendation for the best price for high-end quality is Duplais Balance





The label looks like a scifi nightmare but damn, that is one fine Absinthe!

If you want to give a great absinthe a go, try this one!
