MYSTERY MUSHROOM #1

HABITAT: I found these guys growing underneath trees by Chilliwack, British Columbia today. Near creeks and streams, rich reddish soil with lots of wood particles

GILLS: Same color as top of cap - see photo

STEM: Pretty skinny in comparison to the big caps. Hollow

CAP: About 1" - 1.5" diam. Looked a lot like P. Cubensis in texture, shape, etc.

SPORES: Seemed pink or light red

BRUISE: No discernible bruising

SCENT: Mushroomy! I have no frame of reference really but they smelled a lot like P.C.

MYSTERY MUSHROOM #2

[image][/image]

HABITAT: Same place as Mushroom #1 - growing side by side with them

GILLS: Couldn't tell - didn't want to pick them, they were too cool looking!

STEM: See pics

CAP: Hard to say how big - the whole thing stood about 4" tall

SPORES: No info

BRUISE: Did not test

SCENT: Did not test

Thanks for any help in ID'ing these guys! Just thought they were really neat & was interested to see what they were

Number 1 looks like Nolanea or Entoloma. 2 is a Gyromitra of some sort.

Hmmm. I would first have guessed Pluteus on the first ones. To decide if they are Pluteus or Entoloma, cut one in half vertically. Pluteus have free gills, and Entoloma (and Nolanea) have gills that are attached to the stem. If it's an Entoloma or Nolanea you should consider it poisonous. If a Pluteus it may be one of the edible species, but none of them are known to be spectacular edibles, so probably not worth the effort of eating.

As noted already, the second ones are Gyromitras, False Morels. Many of them have high levels of gyromitrin, which breaks down into methylhydrazine when heated. Methylhydrazine is a rather nasty toxin in that it shows few symptoms until you've gotten rather close to a lethal dose. Although rarely fatal, a few people a year die of eating mushrooms with that toxin, mostly in Europe.

In other words, don't eat the False Morels.

Happy mushrooming!
