Man buckles up his beer. . . but not his kid
    #8395679 -

I've always heard of the "Darwin Awards" but this kinda takes the cake since it happened in Darwin Australia!

Quote:
DARWIN, Australia (AP) -- An Australian driver who secured a carton of beer in his car with a seat belt but left a 5-year-old child unrestrained was fined 750 Australian dollars ($710; €460), police said Tuesday.

Constable Wayne Burnett said he was "shocked and appalled" when he pulled over the unregistered car on Friday in the central Australian town of Alice Springs.

The 30-can carton was strapped in between the two adults sitting in the back seat of the car. The child was also in back, on the vehicle's floor.

"The child was sitting in the lump in the center, unrestrained," Burnett told reporters Tuesday.

"I haven't ever seen something like this before," he said. "This is the first time that the beer has taken priority over a child."

The driver was fined for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and for failing to ensure a child was wearing a seat belt.

Alice Springs Police Superintendent Sean Parnell expressed shock at the incident in a statement released Tuesday.

"This serves as a timely reminder to all drivers to ensure they wear seat belts and ensure as is their responsibility that all passengers in their vehicle are secured in the appropriate manner," he said.

Wow, the kid was ON THE FLOOR? For fucks sake, just put your beer in the trunk.

I hope some sort of social services gets involved. Poor kid...

Hell, when I was a kid, we never had to buckle up. I used to sit in a lawn chair in our van(no back seats). 'Course today, that would be pretty shitty to do that to your(or anyone's)kid. Especially if beer took precedence!

If he would have just put the kid in the trunk and left the beer where it was, the cop would've never known.

This is actually a MAJOR topic in Australia at the moment (for the last year and a half). Well, not this specific case, but welfare of aboriginal people in the outback. They drink a huge amount, and child abuse is extremely prevalent. So they sent in the Army last year to sort things out. It's illegal to take alcohol into some towns out there, and they even have special petrol that can't be sniffed.
So, sad as it is, this story isn't very surprising.

QFT

I NEVER had to "buckle up" as a kid.
I've even fallen asleep in the back window of many sedans.

Rode in the back of a pick-up truck lots too.

Is that just "frowned upon" these days or is it actually a big no-no?

Does anybody else remember riding on their dad's lap as he drove, and feeling special that you were driving? Times have changed since I was a kid. We can't even fit our family in a regular sized car, because three car seats won't fit...

The Navajos around here do it all the time and I've never
seen them pulled over for it, I know I've ridden in the
truck bed tons of times, even recently..

The point isn't really that the kid wasn't buckled up . . . but that the beer WAS while the kid wasn't! The beer was being treated with more caution than the child.

I don't know if this varies from state to state or anything...but here it's fine as long as you aren't touching the tail gate.

Yeah it's legal here too.  Probably because it'd be impossible to stop all the Mexican landscaping companies from doing it anyway.

It's only legal in Alaska if there are seatbelts in the bed of the truck
