underweight vs. overweight and social perception

Why is it socially acceptable to say "Wow, you're so skinny!" but not "Wow, you're so fat!"?

Generally I suppose obesity is related to more detrimental health issues, but being underweight is not without it's variety of health issues and social stigmas.

(Would've posted this in the P&S forum if posting anonymously were possible there. Last thing I want to focus on is how the topic *possibly* relates to me.)

I've always been pretty tiny and I've gotten all sorts of rude comments about my size my entire life. People have told me I'm too skinny, asked if I'm anorexic, made wierd comments about the girth of my legs, etc... The thing is, I'm a totally healthy weight and I don't try and stay this size, its just the way I am, and it's not like I'm a bone rack either, I have love handles and arm flab like everyone else, it's just that I have a slight bone structure and long arms and legs. Rude comments I've recieved strike me as a stupid reaction to how society tends to obsess about the body type I happen to have. It's not my fault I'm built this way and I don't starve myself so I don't deserve to get flack for it! People seem to think it's socially acceptable to tell a thin person how they should "fix" thier body, yet it's considered quite rude to tell a chubby person to lose a few pounds. Well, I think it's rude either way. All healthy body types are beautiful (and there's a broad range) so we just gotta cut it out with scrutinizing one another.

yeah I agree.

You sound like my girlfriend, who people sometimes say she's underweight or stuff, or ask what her secret is. She doesn't really work out or anythin, she's just built that way. I can see how that would get annoying.

I think its just people insecure with their own body or people who feel they are so liberated they have to share/thrust upon their outlook with everyone, including those who have a body type they associate with slavish devotion to diet and excercise, but which in some cases is just genetic.

I don't think it's polite to comment on people's body shapes or sizes.

Thin people do take a lot of shit too. Very often I hear women disparaging a slim woman by saying she's probably anorexic. Not nice.

people who are too skinny and people who are too fat equally disgust me. I am not THAT shallow either. I don't mind fat people...but when they are REALLY REALLY fat..it kind of makes me angry at that person for being such a lazy fat fucking piece of shit.

People tend to stop caring about appearances when the whole world treats them like shit anyway.
