speeding up jar growth?

is there a reason for slowed jar growth, and is there a way to speed it up? this one jar looks like its stopped or slowed down. the remaining uncolonized area has turned orangeish, but it was a little orange before and there was still mycelial growth, nonetheless, it hasnt infected the mycellium....? any comments? its about 80% colonized, when can i birth it?

Do you have tape covering your holes? Mycelium will stall when it runs low on O2... you can remove the tape and flip the jars (lids down) so that the heavier CO2 can drain out. The dry vermiculite barrier will protect against contams. Also shoot for incubation temps around 80-85 deg F for fastest growth. Don't birth until you've got 100% colonization, and it's a good idea to wait for a week after you hit 100% before you birth.

That's BULL!! Who told you that shit? IME mycelium goes NUTS when it's starved for O2.

I find that O2 presence at the top of the pf tek jar SLOWS growth. When I do rye jars they totally colonize in under 2 weeks TIGHTLY SEALED. When I spawn compost I seal the tub or tray as well as possible and it usually takes 9 days to 100% colonize. That's why I avoid opening the tub to check on it, because when I do it exchanges air and SLOWS the colonization noticeably!!
Mycelium grows naturally UNDER GROUND there's no air exchange there!

Wrong. There's more air made available to mycelium grown outdoors than there is to mycelium breathing through four small innoculation holes in a half-pint jar lid. In a sealed jar mycelium will eventually choke, slowing growth and even stalling. Mycelium needs O2 just like you or I.

Fine, then c'mon over and I'll bury you under ground so you can breath all the fresh air down there. FOOL!

Come now, no need for name-calling My lungs can't pull O2 from soil like mycelium, which absorbs oxygen and nutrients via cell diffusion.

I suggest you read "The Mushroom Cultivator" by Paul Stamets.
Please fill me in, I'd love to hear what Paul Stamets recommends for stalled jars.

Hey Zazz................
You talking about cakes or grain/seed?
As far as the Raccoon knows (which -- ain't far). Optimal nutrients & temp are the most important factors. Sealed "tight" works & so does jar lids w/holes.
The Coon uses the two 1/4 inch hole method in plastic lids for quarts & 1/2 gallons jars of mixed bird seed. He leaves the sunflower seeds in, adds some (quart or 2 to a 5 gallon soak) dung/straw fluid from the pasturization process of dung/straw & adds some brown rice syrup (1/2 pint to a pint) & lets the seed soak 12 to 18 hours.
Then rinses WELL, drains WELL & fills jars 3/4 full -- adds a filter disk (internal), uses heavy (like 2 -- 3 tablespoons to a quart jar & 3 -- 4 table spoons to a 1/2 gallon jar) grain to grain transfers & a double coffee filter (external) & incubates at around 80F in a metal filing cabinet.
Quarts fully colonize around 10/12 days & 1/2 gallons around 15 days.

It is true that mushies grow best in conditions of 5000-10000 ppm CO2 concentration during spawn running and prepinning(TMC, p197-198). However, in a small jar filled to capacity with only a couple of holes for gas exchange, CO2 levels can rise above this range quickly. Too much CO2 WILL choke and suffocate your mycelium, while just the right amount will stimulate growth.

It's good that all that works for you, SixTango, but what do you do for stalled jars? It's a little late for him to change out his substrate for the jars he's got colonizing already.

I've also heard that mycelium doesn't breathe oxygen
