maybe and active pan , but i guess not copelandia cyanescens ,maybe close to subbalteatus, or other `panaeolus , this is what happened with some panaeolus then you start to see many variations, but active for sure if you see a blue reaction ,and all have black gill and spores.and that why i state many panaeolus are mildly active i suspect is somehow a third Mechanims in that some races develop the active compounds , in presence of some substances or element or bacteria, but something is there, and panaeolus

i dont think they are subbs there were no lines on the stem that subbs have plus ive picked subbs before and these did not look like any subb ive picked. the bluing is so intense now that they are almost black.

You will need to measure the spores and take a look at the cystidia to get a good species name for it.

Until you do that you can call it Panaeolus cyanescens

I didnt think Pan cyans grew this far north 30-40 mins north of Atlanta.

If you are not familar with the flavor of blue meanies, do a flavor test with one of the stems or caps. They taste quite a bit different then subbalteatus and non-active Panaeolus species.

Panaeolus cyanescens and probably some of the (Copelandia type) allies are said to occur from horse dung, but I have yet to see that with my own eyes. And I have never heard a report of blue meanies growing as far north away from the Gulf as you described (north of Atlanta). But that does not seem like all too far a stretch of the imagination in this case. Nice find.

To me, they look like what I call Copes and they are very strong! I have never seen them grow in horse manure, but I have never seen cubes grow in them either, but on rare occasions they will. I also did not know that they grew that far north. I find them around Houston mostly in the late spring, and fall. Congrats on your find and great pics too.

Thank you all for your great info im stoked about this find and am going back to the same place tomorrow to look sum more. I couldn't really check the pasture as extensively as i wanted to due to the fact that my son and my wife were getting hungry. Its cool cuz the pasture i pick in is owned by my mother in-law so i have no problem hunting there:Dhopefully there will be more finds to come. I only checked about 2% of it its like 156 acres so maybe more finds ill keep my fingers crossed and say a prayer to the mushroom gods. ONE LOVE PEACE:rasta:

Your photo of them as seen in the wild is interesting. How they are popping up right next to a piece of dead wood, and I do not notice dung in the photo. As far as I know Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms do not grow from well manured pastures, only directly from deteriating manure.

They do look slightly off in just a general macroscopic feature kind of manner for me. Possibly, the blue meanies that grow from Horse dung opposed to growing from cow dung could grow to be slightly different. I am not sure as noted above.

The one thing about you photos that made me start to think twice was the stipes. A bit darker red/brown then I have normally seen (maybe not), but what I am pointing out is in this picture where you might have pinched or attempting to bruise the stipe:

In this photo it turned darker brown/black almost where the damage or pinch is seen. Typically a Panaeolus cyanescens bruises rather quickly in most cases, and half the time they exhibit blue before you even find them. Within minutes or sometimes within seconds they exhibit the blue color, but not really brown/black like that right after finding them and doing that.

But they are photos of course and I might not have looked at them enough. Like I mentioned above, if they were in my hands I would have tasted the mushroom, and with that alone I could immediately place it with very little doubt into the realm of being Panaeolus cyanescens or allies.

And you called me when I was photographing collections of cubes in a pasture.

You own me a ruler now. It was only a 69cent ruler but I'm billing you for it because you made me lose it out there. And my pen. Complete distraction. I usually dont bring it in the field with me but was sending alan a real time photo of my finds. My ruler and pen are sitting next to a cubensis pattie right now and very little chance I will find it again, well maybe.

I'm glad she is ok. But you owe me now.

I pick most of my subcubensis not directly off horse dung, but in extreme proximity to a trotting-track.
I have always thought that this would have helped with the growth of mushies. Although horses apparently do have stomach acid, unlike cows...

yes trotting-tracks hold pans of all types in my experience i think its the manure/hay/disturbed habitat that is great for producing actives.

I really appreciate that, I considered it a good trade for the Bolbitius pic I sent you the other day. It wasn't really my Bolbitius, I forwarded you a pic from a cell phone ID request. I set the background wallpaper image on my phone to your cube pic.

You measure the spores on your cubes?
