That snake was pretty chill. He/she hung around letting me photograph for several minutes hanging out, then cruised into my bushes. So I left it alone and went into the lanai, the thing starts climbing my palm tree.. never seen them do that before. Black racers are probably the most common snake in the Sunshine State.

The largest snake I have ever seen in Florida was in northern Florida a little south of Tallahassee. It was about seven feet long, maybe three inches thick. In a Pine forest, mostly sandy yet slightly hilly. I can't remember which type it was, saw it in a field guide once about Florida nature.

Then there are of course rattle snakes in the state. It is about 100X's more likely to see the remnants of their shedded skin then to see the actual snake. They like to hide out in Palmettos during the day.. for a while I was cautious about tromping through brushes of Palmetto, but learned to just blast through the things without much worry. The rattle snakes in Florida do not really want to attack or even be seen it seems; most often it is little children they snap at. I stepped on one one night in a pasture the first few minutes of looking for Copelandia during November. It rattled against my pant leg and I jumped about 10 feet in the air and 20 feet to my right. A adrenaline rush reaction. Afterwards I kept walking for a few seconds thinking I was going to look for shrooms, but decided to just get out of there.

What color was the big snake?
7 feet, could be eastern diamondback, could be indigo snake, could be coachwhip.
I saw a black racer at the mall the other day, hunting brown anoles.

Hows the fungus growing down your way with all this dry weather? Even my forest spots are parched.

If it is dry in Florida, don't look in the forests for mushrooms too much, or even a riparian zone along a river or flood area, look in the pastures.

No I did not know that, but I will see you there. I have family in that town.

The turtles are rarely cooperative when approached with a camera. The one in the photo bugged out and scooted back into the water when I was at about 70 feet. And Gopher Tortoises hide in their shell when approached, typical turtle reaction I suppose.
