Tattoo time

Hi guys and girls,

Lately (the past year or so) I have been thinking about getting a tattoo, but I haven't been able to come up with an idea for a tattoo I really like and would like to have done and wear for the rest of my life. So I have some questions.

Do you have a tattoo? And if so, how did you come up with the design? What does it mean to you?
If you have a tattoo how has influenced your life? Does it give you strength, do people treat you differently because of it and if they do in what way?

I'm hoping to get some interesting stories, and feel free to post pictures even though that would probably make this tattoo-picture thread #2385.

I got my tattoo last year for my 18th birthday.


it's an old cracked stone wheel with a lotus raised off the base, that contains all the sanskrit syllables for the Sutra, "Om Mani Padme Hum" or To have compassion and love all living things.

I have it tattooed above my heart on left pectoral, because it is a dear value and I keep it close to my heart to remind me day in and day out of how to collect good Karma.

Because of the location of my tattoo, it ahsnt been an issue anywhere because it is easily coverable when wearing a shirt.

I love it, can't wait to finish drawin up my next

I don't get a tattoo because no way in shitting fuck would I let my 18 year old self choose a tattoo for my current self at 23, so I'm not gonna encumber my 28 year old self with a lame-ass picture that my 23 year old self chose. Fuck that

IMO its a terrible idea to just want to get a tattoo then thinking of what you're gonna get...

you should get a tattoo if you're REALLY passionate about something. Legit tattoos in my point of view are ones that were born out of the person prior to them actually thinking of getting the tattoo.

too many people now just want a tattoo to get a tattoo, get something menial, doesn't mean much to them, and get over it in some years and now it just sits on your skin.

my advice is let some inspiration hit you then think of the tattoo!!!

My friend has 2 awesome tattoos.

One is the Tree of Yggdrasil.

The other is a Latin phrase, "alter ipse amicus" which means "a friend is another self". Personally I think thats cool as fuck.

I don't have one, but I want one. Not completely sure on what it will be yet but "Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis blues again" will be incorporated.

Razma: I think wanting a tattoo and then deciding what it will be is fine. To me it's no different than wanting to write and then deciding what to write, or wanting to make music then deciding what music to make. I've like body art for years and years. Many times I've thought about piercings but decided against them. I've known for a while I've wanted a tattoo (when I was like 12-18 the kinda people I hung out with/around at shows were always tattooed, getting tattoos was just what you did.)

I say if you're going to get a tattoo, don't get it off the internet! That was a bad mistake I did when I turned 18. dumb. Just grabbed one online, brought it to the tattooist and now I have a rose on my ankle that hundreds of other people have. Plus, now it's not really me. I've grown up a lot since then. It does symbolize who I was then but I may choose to cover it up one day. People change a lot through out their life so choose wisely.

yea i hear ya, i just see people FORCING it out alot of times, and those are usually the tattoos that end up being regretted.

but of course its very individual, and you're right, i guess its not different than sitting down and forcing a song out or a painting

i saw young people (couples) walking into the parlor and picking scorpions and tribals out of the catalogue and off the wall. the artist was really excited to see original ideas.

Ive got a few tattoos, not really any meaning to them per-se, just some stuff my artist drew up for me.

Before you hate on the pics or whatever, I wouldnt have gotten them if I cared what anyone would think, so dont bother.

had my sister draw it up
I prefer more simple, outlined tattoos
oh and its the roman god janus representing transition, interpret that as you like

during the only bad trip i had i was melting into a pool of crazy and then as i was losing sight i look at my gonzo tattoo and see Duke sai "bad craziness..."

that was intense. now every time something goes on that is fucking crazy i look at that ink and nod "yeah, BAD craziness..."

it reminds that there are all sorts gritty situations and i'm in one of those, that insanity is everywhere and not just focused on me - every person can have his own freak out session but here's mine, so i guess it's sort of a ritual for me. i think.

I think this guy has some amazing tattoos, I have been looking into tribal designs but I don't want some generic curly thing without meaning. It has to look really strong and have a deeper meaning.
So if someone can recommend me any sites with some background information on tribal designs etc. to get me started that would be greatly appreciated.
