Yankees foil 'curse' attempt at stadium.

NEW YORK (AP)—A construction worker’s bid to curse the New York Yankees by planting a Boston Red Sox jersey in their new stadium was foiled Sunday when the home team removed the offending shirt from its burial spot.

After locating the shirt in a service corridor behind what will be a restaurant in the new Yankee Stadium, construction workers jackhammered through the concrete Sunday and pulled it out.

The team said it learned that a Sox-rooting construction worker had buried a shirt in the new Bronx stadium, which will open next year across the street from the current ballpark, from a report in the New York Post on Friday.

Yankees President Randy Levine said team officials at first considered leaving the shirt where it was.

“The first thought was, you know, it’s never a good thing to be buried in cement when you’re in New York,” Levine said. “But then we decided, why reward somebody who had really bad motives and was trying to do a really bad thing?”

On Saturday, construction workers who remembered the employee, Gino Castignoli, phoned in tips about the shirt’s location.

“We had anonymous people come tell us where it was, and we were able to find it,” said Frank Gramarossa, a project executive with Turner Construction, the general contractor on the site.

It took about five hours of drilling Saturday to locate the shirt under 2 feet of concrete, he said.

On Sunday, Levine and Yankees CEO Lonn Trost watched as Gramarossa and foreman Rich Corrado finished the job and pulled the shirt from the rubble.

In shreds from the jackhammers, the shirt still bore the letters “Red Sox” on the front. It was a David Ortiz jersey, No. 34.

Trost said the Yankees had discussed possible criminal charges against Castignoli with the district attorney’s office.

“We will take appropriate action since fortunately we do know the name of the individual,” he said.

A woman who answered the phone at Castignoli’s home in the Bronx on Sunday said he was not there.

A spokesman for Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson said Sunday he did not know whether any criminal charges might apply.

Levine said the shirt would be cleaned up and sent to the Jimmy Fund, a charity affiliated with Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

“Hopefully the Jimmy Fund will auction it off and we’ll take the act that was a very, very bad act and turn it into something beautiful,” he said.

But at least one liked the idea.

"[Red Sox jerseys] should be buried under two tons of concrete," said Christopher Rogers, 25, of Albany, who watched the Bombers hammer the Sox 4-1 at Fenway Park last night. "Buried because that's what we do. We bury them."

Yankee legend Yogi Berra offered his own solution.

"I was never superstitious, but maybe we should bury one over there at Fenway too," Berra said.

Yesterday morning, Yankee ownership laughed off The Post's exclusive report about the jinx story as false and said the paper was "10 days late for April Fool's Day."

But when told about the visual proof, the team had to backtrack and issued a new statement about the sabotage attempt.

If the cellphone footage helps locate the buried jersey, "we will say thanks to The Post for showing us where the T-shirt is, so that we can put an extra layer of concrete over it to make sure it stays buried," said Yankee spokeswoman Alice McGillion.

But just in case the buried jersey does indeed bring a curse, Bonnie Thompson, a 37-year-old witch from Hicksville, LI, cast a spell to sweep away the jinx.

"I cast out all negative energies from the Red Sox jinx. Their buried T-shirt has no effect here," the Wiccan priestess said while wearing an all-black dress and Yankees cap. "All negative thought-form be gone."

She then lay a Red Sox jersey on the ground and beat it with a broom.

You know somebody should go down to Fenway, and bury a Babe Ruth jersey under home plate.  Them Red Sox's fans would go nuts.. You'd have them doing live chicken sacrifices to get rid of it.. :tongue2:

If you were really thinking you'd realize that burying Babe Ruth under home plate would be better.

I wish that moron didn't spill the beans about the jersey until after opening day or something.

This is one of the weirdest/stupidest storied ever.

What made the guy fess up? Criminal charges? I'm sure in NYC there must be better things for the cops and DA's office to deal with.

This is what I was thinking too.

Man, there were a lot of Yankees fans at Fenway this weekend, and they were all (well, almost all) fucking obnoxious. Every time one of their players so much as fielded a routine grounder correctly, they would cheer, high five Yankee fans in other rows, smirk, and say "86 champions BABY" or "BOSTON SUCKS". It was ridiculous! Every time someone reminded them that their team hadn't actually "won" anything in quite some time and that the Sox had been more lucky in that department as of late, they would get nasty and insult people personally. What particularly nice guy told a 10 year old kid trying to start the wave to "Sit down and shut the fuck up" and when someone told him to calm down on insulting a child, he said "Whatever, I hope the kid DIES. I hope he gets leukemia". No joke! Real classy bunch!
