"Weed free" manure

Hello everybody,
Recently a friend ran 1 pint of pan cyan spawn to a "weed free" steer manure that was cut with vermiculite; microwaved for 15 minutes. The mycelium responded favourably, and is ready to be placed in a fruiting chamber. I have often heard that weed free manures are amended with a herbacide and/or fungicide. The bag of manure mentions none of the ingredients (what a scrupulous company!) Can anybody tell me off-hand what these herbacides and fungacides are? Round-Up or something similar? Are these herbacides and fungicides really something to worry about, as far as eating mushrooms is concerned, or even the vigor/performance of the mushrooms? Thank you for your help.

as far as i know, weed free, means that it has allready been partially or fully pasturized, so that the weed seeds don't germinate. this is done with heat. the herbicide issues come up when you are into compost that is derived from yard waste, which often contains yardwaste from places that use ponderous amounts of chemicals.

Thank you tchyted. Another question: does amonia (a product of composting) in excess supress weeds? The reason I ask is because this bag of steer manure is truly nostril-burning unlike other some other brands of steer manure.

no, amonia is in fact the principle fertilizer in the doo, it is the principle source of nitrogen. there is also nitrogen from urea and ureaic acid( can't spell) both of which eventually break up into amonia before a plant can use them.

"in excess" i cannot imagine sterilized manure having a high enough amonia content to slow plant growth, though it is possible. applying fresh feces to plants will actually deprive them of nitrogen, and may even kill them. this is not because the amonia is at toxic levels, but it incourages the bacteria that fix nitrogen for use by plants to the extent that they, ( the nitrogen fixing bacteria) will rob the soil of any useable nitrogen. this is why when a dog craps on unfertilized lawns, there is a bare spot directly around the feces, and then perhaps a few weeks later the grass will grow especially green and lush around the bare spot. eventually the bacteria finish their job, and the whole area turns green.

if you buy uncomposted manure, there is a distinct possibility that you will need to let it compost before you use it, as the bacteria will compeate with mycelium for a time.

fairly strong amonia smell will not harm plants.
