I thought of paying through the nose for a TI-89...
    #8238938 -

But then it occurred to me, most of the time I'm sitting here right next to the computer when working through homework, and in-class the TI-83+ is good enough, I just need something to help cut down the time invested in the homework, and make it easier and less work-intensive to check my work.

So, I figured I'd ask, since there's this powerful calculator here hooked up to my keyboard and monitor, can anyone point me to some PC software that offers comparable functions (such as the algebraic manipulation abilities that can manipulate and solve for variable, and the advanced graphing functions)?

I'm sure the TI-89 titanium is well worth the $80-$115 I could get a new one for on eBay (I paid that much for the 83 many years ago), but I'm also sure I don't like paying $80-$115 for things if I don't need to.

I love the ti-82 I stole from school a decade ago.

Ah the things I do for math.

To be fair, they were going for 140 dollars at the time and I couldn't even afford to feed my siblings.

I'm learning to use TK Solver right now. Here's a link to the student version.

I'm adverse to stealing tangible products from an actual store.

"stealing" data, on the other hand, I tend to be comfortable with. Then again if the program is affordable I'd just buy the damn thing to save the hassle. It's not exactly easy to pirate specialist software like that, you have to actually find it first.

There are a host of math programs. Maple, MathCAD, and so on and so forth. The unscrupulous can find them available for illegal download via torrents.

Most programming languages have mathematical libraries built-in.

Yeah, Ti-83+ ftw, though. I keep considering purchasing a newer model to use the 3D graphing and other perks or getting a RPN calculator and learning to use it, but at the end of the day I rely so heavily on my calculator in my courses that it's unrealistic to purchase a new one and try to familiarise myself with a brand new interface.

Yea, I was gonna suggest maple too. Also, mathmatica and matlab are good for specific reasons. Most of the time students start with maple.

Expensive, high end calculators arnt really practical for much IRL, IMO. But, that said they are a fun toy for the nerdy. I use an HP-50g. It capabilities like the Ti-89, but also has RPN.

Well, seeing as how I can find a healthy torrent for Maple 11, I'll give it a try.

As long as it can do algebraic manipulation of expressions in one or more variables, at least for what I'd need up to a pre-calc level, I'd happily buy it if it works for my needs.

I'll be especially pleased if it can factor out an expression, might spare me a bit of tedium on a bit of "busy work" here or there :tongue2:

Dude you can do that shit in maple, you may be put off by the learning curve. I dont know what math you are in, they make students use it in calculus alot.

Maple is very powerful, but its capabilities are limited by the time and patience you have to learn them.

Oh wait you said your in pre-calc. You dont need maple for that at all. If you seek computers to do factoring problems, you will only find a crutch.

I'd like it more for verifying answers than anything else. I know better than to rely on calculators for actual problem solving. If I don't practice I get rusty and dependant. Factoring is one of those time-consuming things to check work for, really.

Um, not really? Factoring's like the quickest and easiest thing to check. You just multiply it all back together. Unless you're dealing with higher than 5th order polynomials or something. Honestly, for your sake, I'd say try to avoid ever touching a calculator at your stage. If you get in the habit of solving equations entirely in your head or on paper, you'll be better off in all areas of your life. Sure something like the sine of 54 degrees is something to do on your calculator, but there's no reason you should type use a calculator for arithmetic.

A calculator is a crutch which breaks your flow and is rarely quicker to use when checking answers. I suppose my exception to this rule is graphing equations on a graphing calc. I find understanding the graphical nature of standard equations is an invaluable skill.

Yes, but a precalculus student should really be able to sketch a graph of most simple functions pretty easily. And simple functions is what they deal with in precalculus. Graphing calculators for education = lame

Konnrade,

Go here and download a TI emulator: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/84/8442.html

Then download the rom file attached to this post.

Put the two together and you have an exact emulation of a TI-89 on your computer.

Keep your eyes open, I got my TI89 off of Craigslist.org. I got it from some high school kid for $60, this thing is almost brand new. His mommy probably bought it for him, and he probably sold it to me for dope $ LOL.

It's really easy to use, 89>83 any day!
