Rice washing tips
    #8227263 -

So every time I rinse my rice I end up losing half of it down the drain. Anyone have any tips or do I just need to buy a strainer with smaller holes?

or when you tip over the pot with the rice, put your hand on the edge of the pot to keep the rice from spilling out...

I assume you are washing before cooking? If so, get a large sieve. Works great.

yeah a large metal sieve/strainer should work nicely for that. you can pick up a good quality one at a local restaurant supply for cheap. got mine for like 5 bucks i think - and its industry quality, not some cheapo shit from the grocery store.

restaurant supply places are great. fuck bed bath and beyond and all those other overpriced stores.

Use a fine mash strainer...

Why are you washng it,because most US rice comes pre-washed.Unless, you plan on using for sushi.

dude
if you dont want to buy a sieve just use the pot youre going to cook it in.
fill the water above the rice, stir your hand to kick up the cloudy particles, then quickly drain as much water as possible before it settles, when the rice is getting close to the edge you have to slow down or the rice will fall out.
repeat the above until water is somewhat clear.

Ok thanks for all the tips. Stirring it in the pot and then draining it a few times over is what I usually do. It works I was just wondering if that was the time proven method. I'll try the sieve or mash strainer. Thanks for all the advice everyone.

you should soak and rinse all dried grains thoroughly, then skim them while boiling, unless directions specifically say not to do any of those things

This is what I've always done and it works just fine. I never spill rice this way and don't have to do extra dishes just to rinse some rice.

rice, i always soak at least 6 hours. overnite generally suffices so that grains cook quicker, but 24 hours is always a good rule of thumb.

the steel-cut oats i eat, i usually soak overnite, but even i let them sit in warm water for 3 hours or so, they cook up just as quick as i had left them out overnite

it just cuts down the cook time for rice, there's such little excess starch in it compared to most grains. can go from 40-60 minutes for the rice to be soft to 15-20 minutes

impgl: if you already see starch/foam rising, you could pour it off, but it doesn't really matter

Whats the secret to stickey rice?

A good friend of mines mom always had a cooker full of stickey rice.

It wasnt mushy, the rice looked opaque instead of white and you cold ball it up into shapes and stuff.. I loved making a few balls of that shit and trying out all the sauces she always had around..

Is it just long grain rice or is their a special secret to it?

Its a short grain rice

Glutinous rice (Oryza sativa var. glutinosa or Oryza glutinosa; also called sticky rice, sweet rice, waxy rice, botan rice, mochi rice, and pearl rice) is a type of short-grained Asian rice that is especially sticky when cooked. It is called glutinous (< Latin glūtinōsus[1]) in the sense of being glue-like or sticky and not in the sense of containing gluten; on the other hand, it is called sticky but should not be confused with the other varieties of Asian rice that become sticky to one degree or another when cooked.
