the wrath of the pepper - kitchen tip
    #1924611 - 09/17/03 09:03 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

this isn't me offering a tip so much as requesting one.

last night I made a chicken salad with roasted peppers.

this entails peeling the charred skin off the pepper and
using the smokey meat.

even after multiple hand washes, everytime I'd pick my
nose, the oils on my fingers would light me up like the
fourth of july.

what's a good way of thoroughly removing these painful
oils off entirely after cooking such that one is safe to
rub their eyes and dig for gold once again?

thanks in advance.

Pure lemon or lime juice are good at cutting the oil, thats why most dish soaps are made with it.  Great for cutting oil and grease.

p.s.
stop picking your nose.

99% rubbing alcohol will take it off. I use it to get resin off my fingers after pipe cleaning! It works for everything on your hands basically

I could never give up nose picking OR smoked
peppers.

it's good to know that I have alternatives.

Half a minute of handwashing with soap works pretty well. Picking at eyes is even worse than the nose though.

Soap, rubbing alcohol, lemon or line juice, and vinegar all work pretty good.

I think the worst bit is if you forget, then pee. There's a delayed reaction before you remember that you hadn't washed beforehand. And that's not a good place for hot pepper. I suppose it'd be worse if you scratched your balls, too.

lol...I know what you mean, I've been cooking with a lot of peppers recently and have experienced the same problem. Yesterday, I sauteed a jalepeno and a serrano and managed to poison the air in my apt...we were all coughing with runny noses for like a half hour before the place got cleared out with fans...funny how they work

Roasted peppers are the best...

Yah, lemon juice is some great stuff for removing most any smell from your hands... Try vinegar too.
