what is the deal with pollinating cannabis plants?

if you plant a male 100 feet away from females, and there are trees and bushes in between them, can the females still become pollinated?

also, how much pollen should i use? if theres a male, and i want to pollinate just ONE female, if i touch the end of the male pollen sack, and then touch the female pistils with the same hand, will that work? and if not/ or so, can this end up pollinating an entire crop?

Outdoor plants are quitea long way from flowering.

Yes, it will deffinitly get pollenated. Like most other plants, when the pollen is released it floats in the air for great distances until it finds another plant. If you have a male that close to your plants it will get pollenated. Also, I would not bother even planting a male, there is no reason to, unless you are so insistant on growing seeds from the plants you planted.

If you want to pollenate one female, somehow contain some male pollen in a ziplock bag, use a Q-tip and LIGHTLY touch/dab an individual bud, and no more. That will create MORE than enough seeds for you. Trust me it's better to have WAY less than too many seeds; hell I never bother to purposely pollenate plants, seeds are a dime a dozen to come buy anyways; and besides those points, the strain of which your seeds may be, might be some nasty Mexi-dirt herb.

Just grow them and destroy any males you come across. Honestly, they're not worth your time.

i appreciate it, i guess i have to find a place to put the male, I MIGHT know a location a mile or so away(which could STILL somehow inevitably pollenate all the females, right?)

i'm going to be growing an autoflowering strain, i heard you can't clone the plants, so the truth is, yeah, it would be really helpful to get a ton of seeds.

In some instances, AF strains have been successfully cloned.

But if it's seeds you want, i think it'd be best if you grew a male indoors, or completely isolated from the female. Afterwards gather the pollen sacs and put them in a ziploc. Keep the ziploc in a fridge. When you are ready to pollinate your female, use a small paint brush and 'stroke' the pollen onto the flowers. Designate areas where you will pollinate, and areas where you will not. The areas where you didn't pollinate should be more potent, and in the end, a better smoke!

so what do you think i'd be better off doing? attempting a clone? or attempting pollination?

Well cloning is possible, but IMO it'd be a waste of time.
It'll lessen the yield by a substantial amount. You'd slow down the 'mother' plant too much, and the clone wouldn't be able to put out enough roots to have any worthwhile harvest.


EDIT:

Actually, i was assuming you had an LR or some sort of LR hybrid. If your AF strain is large it enough, cloning could actually prove useful. The downside is that generally it takes a bit longer, 3-5 weeks, for a cutting to root.
