A cannabis plant - it has a 3-leaf formation???
    #2793090 - 06/14/04 07:35 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, so I looked at this little sprout a buddy has going. He just emptied his old canister with a bunch of pot seeds from days ago, and started them last week.

Anyway - I've seen a million plants. But never, ever, have I seen a plant that starts with 3 leaves!

What's up with this? Is this a wierd strain or just a freak of nature, like being born with 3 arms???

(More input: Ok, usually, as the seed shell pops open, there are 2, and only 2 ROUND leaves. Once those round leaves open, the first regular leaves form, and 2 grow out. At this point, the 2 round leaves and the two jagged leaves look like an X or + from above. 4 total leaves, two round, two jagged. Right?

Well, not this plant. It has 3 round leaves, and 3 initial jagged leaves. The 3 rounds grew out like a T or Y, and now with the jagged ones in there it looks like a star from above. 6 leaves, 3 round, 3 jagged. What's up with that? - ANYONE ever seen it before?)

I'll ask him for a pic in the meantime.

they usually have 2 round leaves and 2 jagged one like you say, but 3 and 4 or even 1 leaves happens too.

There is a strain like that (3 leaves)... it's called ducksfoot and is a soaring sativa... it'll grow huge and has big buds. You are very fortunate if that's what you have...

i highly doubt its a duckfoot strain because as far as i know the only abnormality with them occurs at fan leaves, not initial leaves.. most likely its just a genetic anomoly. ive never had more than 2 seed leafs (rounded ones) but i have seen plenty of other fan leaf abnormalities.

I have always had the two baby round leaves and then a leaf of three, then five, seven nine, that's how it always goes, but now you have got me thinking I'm nuts.

Ok, picture time.

First pic is obvious -> bird eye shot of the 3-leafer.

Now, here's a shot of the garden. You can all the other plants are normal - 2 jagged leaves, and 2 round ones. Some are hard to see, but trust me on this.

Again, all the others are NORMAL, as most plants, in general are.
Aside from the 3 jagged leaves, let's focus on the fact that there are 3 round leaves. You see, as a shell splits open - it splits into 2. And each side essentially has a round leaf lining it. So - where in the hell did this third leaf come from? You really think it's a wierd or special strain? Or just a fluke of nature?

Small round leaves/Seed Leaves are called Cotyledons. THey're in the seed and "alive" for quite a while living off endosperm. Quite possibly a fluke or a nuance of the strain, grow it out and see how it fairs.

The plant is too young to tell at the moment and the pics are horrendous on my eyes. Keep it alive and let's see what happens with it.

Sorry about the pic. That's how they come out when under that bright light. Maybe we'll try another one with all white light...

Grizzy,

As you've described it, that is exactly what it is.  I notice this thread began in '04 over a year ago, so the plant wouldn't still be around. :frown:  I wish I could have read this earlier.  I would have told you tell you friend to clone the hell out of that 3 leaf little guy (hopefully gal).  Pollyploids are very rare, indeed.  From what I've heard, they produce more by 1\3.  More colas, more buds.

Hope she tasted good!

Mutants occur when you take a plant from flowering and reenter veg. Or otherwise it can occur by random genetic change within the plant.
