I have a intel dual core CPU. I thank it really matters how much memory you have.I wouldn't use it on any thing less then a 1g.

About builiding your own... I think the savings are minute. If you have to pay $200 for a retail version of the OS, then building your own is more expensive.

But most computer builders bootleg their OS, so they can build it cheaper. But its not alot cheaper, jsut a bit. However your parts are usually higher quality.

There's no reason to upgrade to Vista unless you are a hardcore gamer with the latest DX10 card and games.

Costco.com had a good Return policy. You buy one and return it two years later and get a new one..Not any more..

You can customize your own laptop on the Dell site with XP as the OS.

But i'm assuming you want a Desktop. I don't know if they give that option on their site.

I have vista and xp dual-boot setup on my desktop. I dont find vista slow, but compatibility is my problem.

I am running it fully 64-bit on an overclocked AMD fx processor.

I still use XP almost daily because of compatibility issues possibly caused by my 64-bit setup, but I still enjoy the multi tasking that is possible in my vista setup....

Bingo.

I built an intel quadcore machine with 4 gigs of ram, middle of the road video card (i'm not a computer gamer) and a harddrive for less than 750 at newegg. I've been building my own computers since I was 16. I like knowing EXACTLY what is going in my computer.

Compatibility is the biggest issue for me. A lot pre-Vista games and software I have won't work with Vista. Also when looking a newer compatible games realize that often the minimum specs are listed for XP even if it says compatible with Vista. If you are running Vista you need to add about 1 gigahertz to the processor specs and 1 gig to the ram. some games will give the specs for both but many do not.
