I'm considering the idea of making a psychrometer, any advice?

Yeah so i want to make one because they seem pretty easy to construct and i can make it look cool.

My plan

Materials:
- 2 simple thermometers measuring as close to the same temperature as possible (to try and offset manufacturing +/-)
- some sort of wick (i'm thinking of a .125" cotton tube or similar)
- small water reservoir (probably a bit bigger than my thumb, maybe 2 thumbs)
- mounting board (most likely acrylic sheet .25" thick)
- mounting straps (or glue or sticky pads or something)

Directions:
- mark and drill mounting holes
- mount reservoir
- mount dry thermometer on board
- put wick around magic end of the other thermometer
- put free end of wick into reservoir
- add water to reservoir
- give some time, then compare readings to downloaded chart

How does this sound? Feasible?

I know i could buy one for 15 bucks, but i want to try and make one for my own reasons. My concern is how well do you think it will work compared to the $15 ones?

Also, what is the difference between a $15 wet/dry bulb and a $55 of similar physical characteristics. Is it the accuracy of the thermometers?

what is there to calibrate? How would you calibrate a thermometer?

I may be missing something. Care to elaborate?

Why don't you just shell out and buy a digital one. from what i've read it'll be difficult to get an accurate reading, a pain in the ass to build, and to get a decent reading every single time.

I thought about it, and I used to have a digital one but the humidity fucked up the electronics and it just never turned on again. Plus i hear that the digital ones aren't very accurate above like 70 or 80 or so.

I'm starting to get into the mode of "fuck electronics". With chips and shit, if one little electron gets out of place, they perform unexpectedly/poorly/inaccurately and there isn't anything you can do. With physics, specifically thermodynamics and the like, it will work the same all the time, in a completely predictable manner, and it will be 'waterproof' and give analog results which i can then quantify and determine the final results myself using an even better cpu... my brain! Plus, it's just another exercise for the ol' noggin to keep on thinkin'.

Think about it, they use psychrometers to calibrate digital hygrometers, so why not skip the middle man and go straight to the source. Plus, if i build it, i get that sense of self-reliance/accomplishment that you rarely get from buying shit made from other dumbasses, and/or paying a huge mark up on materials and labor.

If i were to 'get' a digital one, i would buy a book on sensors and buy the materials to build it myself. Then i can use the chips to do other things like if the humidity gets to low, turn on a ultrasonic fogger, or for a more advanced trick, if the CO2 is too high, then turn on a set of small fans.

A friend of mine knows where to get some good books and materials to accomplish things like that... i got inspired.
