monotub FAE calculation
    #8186268 -

Is there a formula I can use to determine the number/size of holes I need to make in my monotub? Maybe a ratio between tub volume and hole (cut-out) area? Is it a bit of a guessing game?

start out with less and work at it till you get it right

yeah, if it's too much and the substrate is drying, i can just plug a few holes with tape.

actually i think it would be easier to start out with too many then just cover some holes if it's too much. drilling new holes for more FAE seems to be a pain in the ass. plus i don't want plastic shavings in my sub

doing some ratio calculations:
you end up with roughly 11 square inches of holes per 35 gallons

monstermitch's tek calls for 8 2" holes per 21 gallons. that means he's got roughly 100 square inches per 21 gallons.

seems like quite a big difference and i'm not sure how to resolve it.

id follow that tek, or as close as you can.

2" holes seem to be the way to go.

Id bet that with 3/8" holes there are more variables that come into play with that small of an area.

thats why you should wing it

I am setting up my FC now and will be doing a trial run to make all the adjustments before I actually put it into use.

Watch out with 2" holes. I can't for my life keep polyfill in holes that big... I would stick with 1-1.5" holes and just add a couple more. Just my $0.02

Just something else to add. Alot of us use closets to grow. Closet have stale air...the only fae you need is when ur fruiting... also helps to have ur cool mist on a timer so u can simulate 2 air changes per hr(or close to it)

i use MM's tub tek with the 8 2" holes and it works out great for me. also mine are stuffed with poly (not too much poly though).

i also have a fan on a timer for 3 hours off and 1 hour on. it doesnt point directly at the tub but oscilates.
