I've been kind of tentatively interested in photography for a few years now, but never did anything about it. I had an inspirational conversation with my dad last week and now I'm all pumped to start doing something!

What kind of camera should I get? Cost isn't a big deal--I'd rather spend more now than get something crappy and have to upgrade right away. Are there any books/magazines/articles I should be reading? Anything else I should know?

you'll need a tripod/ also make sure you get the camera with the most mega pixels.

you can find stuff i bet online that will tell you about lighting and camera angles.

always keep the sun to your back. unless you know how to filter out lighting.

just have fun and always carry your camera around cause their are picture opportunity's every freaking day.

i happen to be passing one like every day down the street from my house. iv been a Lil lazy about taking pictures recently.

i always end up wishing i had a tripod also. i went to a festival and seen these people that had all these crazy staffs and canes. and the best one i seen was a dude that walked with his tripod and camera like a staff lol what a Genius.

also make sure to get some memory cards, extra batterys, a durable pack for your camera. i always run out of room, batterys, and fuckin broke my priveiw screen snow boarding. damn

eh.. megapixels does not necessarily translate to quality.

if you don't care about price and you're seriously interested in getting into photography, then i'd say go for a solid D-SLR. maybe a canon rebel? or perhaps sony a700. i dunno, i've never played with them much myself, however i hear they are the way to go for serious aspiring amateur photographers.

do you want to start with digital or film, I cut my teeth on
a medium format (120) when I was about 6, dad bought it at a
yard sale, at 14 I had a 35mm Yashica and a Minolta x-700,
stepped into the digital world with a Nikon D-1 and a cheap
little Kodak then move to a Hasselblad 555 ELD and a digital
back, I still love film cameras in medium format

set a price range and the sort of features you're looking
for and we can probably help you out a little more, I picked
up a Sony f828 a couple years ago after the rest of my
equipment was stolen, i was diappointed whe it didnt do
black and white but had built in sepia

If you decide to go with a digital camera, remember you want Optical zoom. Digital zoom doesn't mean shit and you should never use it.

Personally i think people who are really into the art of photography should stick with old SLR's and forget the digital cams. I'm not doubting their quality or anything but nothing beats real film IMO. I love working in the darkroom developing photos this is where i think digital photo's lose. When you make your own prints you get the satisfaction of doing the work yourself instead of pressing a button on a computer screen.

Look for old pentax and canon cameras, i had a canon ae-1(i think this is the model) for years and the thing had gone through vietnam. It still had the journalists company etched into the bottom. It finally died in the late 90's (shutter fucked up), but it had been around for almost 30 years at that point and took awesome photo's up until the day it died.

yeah, but the problem is most don't have the space or the resources to develop their own film.

true, but, if you have a local community college chances are they have a darkroom. It's not that expensive to take a college class in photo, plus if you know or get to know the prof and lab people well enough you'll be able to use the darkroom when you need. I took a photo class at my CC the second year i was there and from that point on any time i wanted to use the lab i was let in. I just had to pay for my own paper and every once in a while i tossed the lab a few bucks for chemicals.

I miss the smell and feel of a darkroom, my favorite part was killing the red light and sitting in complete blackness so i could load a film reel to develop a roll. I hated using dark bags so that was my only other option. It was like a mini sensory deprivation chamber.
