So today I got to class and my teacher say's that there is a written assignment on the classes website. I just got on and this is what my teacher asked us.

If you pay attention to the news, you're probably sick of hearing about the photo of Olympian Michael Phelps with a bong that appeared in a British tabloid newspaper recently. However, the discussions of this image are relevant to our class, and I'm interested in what you think. This--the IMAGE--is your topic, not the question of pot's illegality. Some questions to think about include Does it make a difference that we can see an image of Phelps's illegal activity? Does it make a difference that he's so famous? (He can't be the only 23-year-old taking bong-hits. But what about royals--do we ever see images of them doing this kind of thing? Why not?) No one has questioned the authenticity of the image--why? What if camera phones had been available years ago? Would certain politicians have had successful careers if anyone had "captured" them as they--for example--didn't inhale from the joint they were holding? Why is the photographic image so powerful?
