USA Swimming suspends Phelps for 3 months

Michael Phelps’ day grew lousier by the hour on Thursday.

First he lost a major sponsor, then he got suspended.

The Olympic great was suspended from competition for three months by USA Swimming, the latest fallout from a photo that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

The sport’s national governing body also cut off its financial support to Phelps for the same three-month period, effective immediately.

“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” the Colorado Springs-based federation said in a statement.

“Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust.”

Phelps won a record eight gold medals in Beijing and returned to America as one of the world’s most acclaimed athletes. He made headlines of a different kind, however, in the wake of the photo, published Sunday by News of the World, a British tabloid.

Earlier Thursday, cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. announced it wouldn’t renew its sponsorship contract with Phelps, saying his behavior is “not consistent with the image of Kellogg.” The swimmer appeared on the company’s cereal boxes after his Olympic triumph.

“Michael accepts these decisions and understands their point of view,” said one of his agents, Drew Johnson. “He feels bad he let anyone down. He’s also encouraged by the thousands of comments he’s received from his fans and the support from his many sponsors. He intends to work hard to regain everyone’s trust.”

Phelps’ coach, Bob Bowman, said he believes Phelps will emerge from the experience a stronger swimmer and person.

“Michael’s been through a lot and he’s learned a lot, hopefully,” Bowman told The Associated Press during a telephone interview. “I support him and I want to see him do better. I’m here, as always, to try to help him move forward. He’s learned some tough lessons and he’s disappointed a lot of people, me included.”

Phelps has acknowledged “regrettable” behavior and “bad judgment.” He didn’t dispute the authenticity of the photo, reportedly taken at a house party while Phelps was visiting Columbia, S.C., in November during an extended break from training.

That's just fucking absurd.

But I don't think it'll really hurt him any, he said he was pretty out of shape these days since he took time off after the Olympics, he's just going to be training for those 3 months anyway.

But I think it's about time that professional sports stopped treating cannabis the same way they treat performance-enhancing drugs. For these athletes, smoking cannabis is more of a hinderance than anything... why shouldn't they be allowed to compete with a handicap?

This has to be the biggest load of crap ever just leave the kid alone lets see these people accusing him do the things Phelps did in the Olympics. I think its all a bunch of penis envy they cant have the things he has so punish him for it in every conceivable way because he made a mistake in their eyes.

Call me crazy, but everything that's transpired since that photo became public makes sense.

As a high profile (possibly the highest profile EVER) Olympic athlete you understand what can happen when you smoke weed at a party.
He's been suspended during a time that is essentially completely irrelevant.
He's been dropped from a sponsorship (which I didn't know) because the American public as a whole does not accept pot.

He isn't going to be jailed because he can't, and the Olympic Committee isn't going to try and take away any medals because they can't. When years pass and people talk about all time great Olympic athletes he will always be mentioned.

People say it's ridiculous or absurd, but what is any party involved supposed to do?
A lot of people I know have been saying shit like "He should just support what he did and say 'Yeah I smoke weed and I still won 8 medals.'" That would lose tons of sponsorships, potentially lose his place on the 2012 American team, and just be a bad move. I think everyone has done what's possible to give him the smallest amount of punishment possible without harming their own business.

It's not the first high profile case and it won't be the last.
The sad fact is the majority of Americans don't think weed should be legal, and I'm sure a strong majority of Americans are far from pleased by this kind of behavior.

It's not just religious nut jobs.
For example my dad. I was raised in a non-religious environment. My dad goes to church EVERY Sunday and we celebrate Christmas. My mom went to Saturday school, knew Hebrew, and we lit the candles and said the prayer every Chanukah. We (my brother, sister, and I) were raised in an environment where we were told to make our own decisions. I'm probably the least "atheist" out of all three, but my dad (and mom while she was alive) didn't care.

My dad is a moderate liberal, he always made sure we were educated on whatever we wanted to debate, and he's a functioning alcoholic. Any time when I was smoking weed he came across any evidence he became very cross with me.
I could go tell him now that I smoke weed every day and he would not be happy with me. I could tell him I drink alcohol everyday and he would just call me irresponsible but not be nearly as cross.

It's not just the "religious nut jobs" that you all would like to think are unhappy with weed. I don't think the majority of Americans are "religious nut jobs", I do believe the majority of Americans are not accepting of weed, let alone other illegal drugs.

its so sad because he did what he had to do. I mean if he stood up they would have eaten him alive and his career would have been done. Even though the general consensus is "no big deal", the league and media treat him like a disgrace

indeed... i wonder what would happen if roor were to actually offer him a sponsorship deal... he'd probably just turn it down... it would be kick-ass, though... seeing the guy swim down the lane with the roor logo on his back... enter stoner fantasy: then after finishing first getting out of the pool and ripping a huge hit out of a 4-footer (lung capacity, FTW!)... i can certainly see the tv-ad forming...

no, the current cnn poll shows 2/3 of voters think phelps shouldnt lose sponsors because of this. i tend to think that most people think weed is not a big deal
