Digital SLR Cameras
    #9316814 - 11/26/08 01:13 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Im looking to buy a Nikon D60 / 80 or 200 this xmas for myself.  Possibly a canon, its just for taking some sick photos when im out and about.

Any recommendations on cameras?
Any sites out there that these are sold cheap on and reliable?

I'd say read up on kenrockwell.com

It's much better to get a cheaper dslr body with a good lens than an expensive dslr and a standard lens.

Canon EOS 30D, had good experiences with it
I've also tried a Canon EOS 400D but I like the 30D better.

Go for at least a Nikon D60, you will be very happy. I recommend looking on amazon or Ebay for the best price... I recently went shopping for a camera and found some AMAZING deals.

If you're looking for an SLR camera I'd suggest spending a bit more at a decent store with good service.

I mean, it's not all that important if a 100dollar snapshot camera is damaged. But I bet you'd like decent service in case your expensive SLR camera gets damaged.

It's your choice anyway

many companies like Nikon have a 2 year extended warranty for most of their products. I highly suggest getting a camera with an accessory pack (more lenses, carrying cases, memory cards, lense cleaners, tripod, lense protectors ETC) It will save you money in the long run. You are going to eventually have to get all these items down the line anyway so it saves cash.

What types of photos do you plan on taking? nature, people, landscapes, city life, macro shots?

I use a hybrid camera.. It's one by Olympus and is pretty decent. There are lots of capabilities by playing with ISO, Exposure time etc. It has a 10x optical lens, instead of 3x what most snapshot cameras seem to have. I'm happy with my camera.
For some (unedited results, see: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/9310658/an/0/page/0 )

My girlfriend has the Canon EOS 30D and I've done several things using her 30D and using the 30D's from school (I study Media & Design). My parents own a 400D.

As for the warranty, yep.. And I'd prefer buying one from a store anyway. Besides, some nice stores will make a good price if you buy some additional things (UV Filter, Macro ring etc etc) with it.

I shoot with a Canon 30D. I do mostly nature/architecture photography and I shoot sports games for a newspaper. I'm definately no pro, I'd say I'm an advanced amature or something like that. Take a look at my gallery and decide for yourself.

The camera you should get depends on you knowledge of photography. A D200 would be big time overkill if you're not very well versed in photography, they are very advanced and complex cameras.  From what you've said, I'd go with an entry level SLR like a D80 or D40 if you're set on Nikon. Every pro I've talked to shoots with Canon because they tend to have better low light proformance and a larger selection of lenses. I'd take a look at the Rebel XTi.

I could go on forever about this, but not right now because I'm on my phone. I'll post back later tonight with a hell of a lot more info.

I've always been a fan of Canon equipment. All my film cameras were Canon. I've recently been looking at purchasing a decent Canon digital SLR. I'd like to go for a nice model like the 5D, but money will probably dictate my purchase and I'll get the 450D (also known as the Rebel XSI).

The new Canon 1Ds mark III is fucking sick.  But 95% of the amatuer photographers couldn't even use this thing if they wanted to.  However, if I had the funds I'd definately own one!
...of course you could buy a nice car for what that thing would cost you!

I'm going to bump this thread.  I am in the market for a d40 or d60 nikon.  Any fellow shroomerites have one of these models?  I am really starting to get busy with photography and need to upgrade equipment and knowledge.  sucks that all that equipment costs so much.

I'd say go with a Canon 40D/50D. I have the Canon 30D. I shoot college football/basketball/volleyball/soccer games for a newspaper from time to time and every professional (ESPN, Sports Illustrated) out there has a Canon camera. I've asked them why and they tell me the main reason is they shoot very well in low light(low noise @ high ISO), shoot a high amount of pictures per second (newest pro cam does 9fps) and have a very wide range of lenses compared to Nikon

If you're not in the market for a semi pro cam like the 40D/50D, check out the Canon Rebel XTi or XSi. Both are good for an amateur photographer.

I have the d40. It's pretty good. The stock lense is good, but I'd pick up an extra macro and a 55-200mm lens personally.

That's what i did.  got the d60 and just the stock lense.  It's pretty good.  I was thinking about those lenses as well.  Also need an extra battery and a larger memory card.  I saw newegg had a 16 gb card for 25$ w/ free shipping.  Here are some pics i took today.

I have a Canon 450D (XSI) and love it.  The lens it comes with is image stabilized so you can take better pictures in low light.  While it is an adequate lens, I would highly suggest purchasing an additional lens.  Canon makes a very cheap lens called the "nifty fifty" or the "thrifty fifty".  It runs about $80 online and takes great pics.  It is excellent for shots where the subject is in focus while the background is blurry.

Whatever you choose, stepping up to an SLR will make a world of difference in your pictures.

Here is a GREAT site to read up on your choices as well as photo techniques.

I got a Sony A200 in July, my first DSLR camera to learn on.

It was about $500 with what is supposed to be an above average kit lens. The rap on the camera is that it may not work as well well in low light as some Ca(nikon) models and things like that.

Also the selection of lenses is smaller and less professional in terms of use by 'pros' and whomever, since you are buying into a "system", as they say. In terms of not having as many lenses, I figure I'm not anywhere close to being serious enough or having enough money to be dropping hundreds and/or thousands of dollars on more lenses. A few good deals and I'm set with 2-3 lenses in the future.

My rationale was that I was only learning about DSLR and wanted bang for the buck. Without an expert eye, it is hard to distinguish minute differences in all the entry level to mid-grade DSLR's so I got this one.
The A200 is a fine camera and I've taken some cool pics with it. I have since bought two used Minolta lenses which are fantastic. The community of Minolta photographers appreciating the Sony brand seems to be quite alive and there are many fine products to be enjoyed.

Fuck yeah those work great. Before Christmas, I either wanted to get the new Pentax or Canon Rebel XS. I got the Canon Rebel XS instead and it works fucking great..also a great deal...what matters most about taking pictures is the pixels in your camera, and in range from 300 to 600 at least

Mine's got a stabilizer too I love how I can handle this safely without dropping it, obviously because I'm more careful than stupid anymore. PM me to check out the awesome pics I took from Boulder CO and such  I'm very comfortable with it's features

Actually what matters the most is the quality of the sensor chip (CCD or CMOS) that is being used in the camera. A lot of companies out there are jacking up the megapixels in the cameras with cheap, shitastic image sensors. Big shitty sensor = big shitty pics. Higher megapixels, at least with some brands, has turned into a marketing ploy because everyone thinks OH! MOAR MEGA PIXZLE IS GOODS! ... Neg.

bullshit, the sensor doesn't make a good photo

framing, composition, focus, lighting, and other aspects dependent on the photographer (not the camera), these all make a quality image

I'm talking image quality, not composition and all that stuff. You can have a great photographer with a ton of skill, then you hand him a shitty camera with a shitty sensor and you're going to get a shitty picture that could have been a lot better.

the glass and the censor is the most important thing. You can have a 10,000$ camera but ifyou are using a 50$ lens you will get shotty pics. You dont need an expensive camera to take 'sick' pics. My mom has a nice olympuss point and shoot and she always wants to update each year, silly consumerism at its finest. Her camera takes awesome pictures, I use a canon xti and it takes great pics, just remember its equally about the lenses you use that it is about the body, and finally about how you use those tools.

Pentax is getting better and releasing lenses with hypersonic motors too.  They also have image stabilizing built into the sensor instead of the lenses, which can be much more cost effective, considering stabilized lenses cost a fortune.

Check out Nikon, Canon and Pentax.

the best stabilizer is a steady head and a sturdy tree. I enjoy technology but I hate to depend on it, good technique would produce great pictures.

before you buy a camera take a real close look at the battery compartment.

1. make sure it uses batterys and not a manufactorers sellout bullshit you won't be able to buy in a couple years.

2.  look really really close at how the battery door closes and seals shut.  this is the weakest point on a camera and deserves your upmost attention.

I was all gunhoe about nikon when i purchased my first digital camera 990 coolpix.  the thing rocked, and still puts alot of camera's to shame even today(8+ years) and its only 3.34 mega pixels.

however nikon is a shitty company as i have found out within the past few years.  they design many of there camera's to fail.  they design the battery doors with cheap plastic, and these little tiny pieces hold the batterys in.  and even worse, instead of springs they use hard metal fins for the batterys to sit on....so when you close the door for it to shut all the way you really have to push....and when you lock the door shut all the pressure is pushing on those little plastic pieces.

anyways nikon has a long run of designing camera's this way far as i can tell.  and anyone with half a brain would know it would fail while they were designing it...hence they are ps'ofs.  but if you can find a new nikon that is designed right then go for it.

but i myself am boycotting those basterds for as long as im in the camera market, i paid $1000 for my camera there shouldn't be bullshit like that happening.....and they sure as hell shouldn't be charging people $200 to fix it with the same part!!!

the best stabilizer is a steady head and a sturdy tree. I enjoy technology but I hate to depend on it, good technique would produce great pictures.

IS is generally turned off, but sometimes your 'steady hand' or 'steady tree' or 'rock on the ground' just won't cut it for the proper angle of what you are trying to photograph without any blur.

Saying that using optical stabilization, lens or sensor based is something that makes you less of a photographer is like saying good photographers never use a tripod.

Stabilization is something that helps eliminate the need for a Tripod in many situations.  The use of IS has nothing to do with technique, using it neither decreases or increases your skill as a photographer, it is just another tool like a tripod.  You can be an excellent photographer and have an excellent eye, but not be able to steady your lens well if you've got a 500mm lens and don't have the time to attach a tripod (i.e. wildlife photography).
