Cameras
    #8107864 -

So I just got a call from my mom. She still lives in my hometown and she told me that in the newspaper there was an article about the city putting up broadband survailence cameras all over town to cut crime. This makes me very unhappy even though I don't live there. I'm kinda suprised it was put in the newspaper though. I would think there would be a lot of people in town pissed off. Anyway I had to vent about this. The newpaper is not online or I would have posted in the news forum. She is going to mail me the article and I will probably update with the full story.

So this is in Vinita, OK. I thought it was strange. In the article the city council said specificaly that they were not going to use these as traffic cameras but only for other crimes in the city. I wish I had the whole article to read. Moms not to tech savvy but she said she would try to scan it and email it to me. It might be a few days. If I was there I would be at the next city council meeting.

STFU! Vinita!!

I grew up not too far away.

Oh, for everyone else out there, Vinita Oklahoma is home of the largest McDonad's in the world (well, as of a few years ago, dunno if it still is), it's over a highway.

It was also infamous for having a mental health facility. It's since shut down, but a big running joke around here was to tell people they're from Vinita, or would need to go to Vinita b/c they were crazy.

Shit. Vinita is known nationwide as the "Crazeytown". I used to work on the road and someone wereever I went would know about Vinita. One time a guy I worked with told my new crew that I was on work release from eastern state for cutting one of my employees into pieces, but the doctors said I was ok to work now. I didn't have any problems from that crew. It was fun.

Thats different. This is America and as an American I believe this is bullshit. Its another way to waste tax money on something that nobody wants so cops can be lazy and sit behind a desk and then arrest somebody when ever they feel like getting off their lazy asses. If they are behind a desk they can't even stop violent crimes before someone gets seriously hurt, Which to me is about cops only usefullness anyway.

It's about more than that. This is just them gradually turning us into a police state as someone had stated before.

There are cameras ALL over Chicago.

I think that last I saw there are something like 3,000 government owned public surveillance cameras in the city. They are all over. At every el stop in the city, every school, every public square. All over the place.

I know in Daley Plaza downtown anywhere you stand you can be seen by 3 or 4 cameras.

From the Vinita Daily Journal

Broadband cameras to be used
"Eye in the sky" to combat vandalism

It won't necessarily be a case of "Big Brother is watching you," but the Vinita City council OK'd the decision Tuesday night to install wireless broadband cameras around the city for security purposes, after complaints of vandalism and other situations have arisen.

Representatives from the Pilgrim Presbyterian Church appeared at the council meeting with complaints of vandalism and lewd behavior by youths on their property.

They were specifically concerned about damage caused by youths skateboarding on their property, and causing $8,000 worth of damage to the church property.

The council suggested that they take proper action when youths are observed on their property, which includes making an official police report, so that the suspects can be located and charges filed against them.

The idea of using the city's wireless broadband services through Connex USA to beef up security will hopefully be another solution to this problem, according to City Administrator Charlie Enyart.

In an interview this morning Enyart said, "We will have the cameras up all over the city, so wether it is youth or adults committing acts of vandalism or other crimes, we will be able to monitor it and, if they are caught, we intend to press charges against them"

The subject of skateboarders also led to the discussion of the future of the city's skateboard park, which has been closed several months while the council determined the best way to run it.

Enyart said that the plan is to install cameras at the skateboard park and to enclose the area with material that will help reduce the noise level of skateboards on the ramps.

This will address problems that arose when the skateboard park was previously open, which included unwanted behavior by some users of the skate park and also complaints of the noise by surrounding businesses.

Enyart said that having the cameras all around the city will help eliminate some of the problems the city has received complaints about.

"We won't go as far as monitoring people on the cameras for things like traffic violations, like some cities have tried to do, but we will use the cameras to try to help monitor what is going on for the safety of our community," he added
