Dude, I'll sell you my FujiFilm Finepix 4.0 megapixel cheap. It has 10 x zoom and shit. Pretty nice camera. My only complaint is that it's too bulky for me (it's not one of the flat ones) and I want a higher megapixel. Thing works like a champ though.

Make sure you get one with a good screen and has video capture capabilities and check that the playback is smooth enough.

Ok. let me throw some more specs at you:

-The model is the Fujifilm S 5100. Amazon has pics and reviews up.
-Has a carrying case.
-Has a cable to hook up to the USB on the computer.
-Has a 512 MB card. That holds about approximately three-hundred pictures at 4 megapixel.
-Has a 16 MB backup card (which is pretty useless in my opinion).
-Has all the accessory shit it came with.

Well, on Amazon it appears as if they are going used for $180.  I'll sell it for $140 and I'll pay shipping.  But, ONLY because you have the second largest penis on the Shroomery.  :smirk:

I'm pretty fair too.  If the thing breaks in a month I'll give you your money back (if you send the camera back).  If it breaks in like a year or something I'd probably give you half your money back, etc.. etc..

i love my panasonic lumix FX01

i'm not sure if the model numbers are the same.. but, you should look into the lumix.  Wider angle than standard point and shoot... takes awesome low light shots.. really nice macro mode... many pre-set specialty modes (landscape, lowlight, fireworks, etc, etc), most which do actually seem to help..

yos, before i stumbled upon this, i was actually looking into getting a panasonic lumix dmc-fz8k http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-FZ8K-Digital-Optical-Stabilized/dp/B000MWVMRG/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-2537775-2775868?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1191503622&sr=8-2

only 230 on amazon right now, 250 for that and a 2 gig memory card (that's a fantastic bundle).  perhaps you should consider it gonz.  it was given a highly recommended review from dpreview http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz8/ and is comparable to those models you're looking at, for at least 100 bucks less.

it's still appealing to me, but randal's deal is significantly cheaper, so that's the way my cheap ass is gonna have to go.

I don't know about the particular models but I've owned a few Fuji's and can say that they make good, reliable cameras.

i have a kodak v803 and its awesome. only $160 at the store, and it takes great close up shots of anything, and awesome landscape shots as well, with a battery that lasts a damn long time, plus its a nice flat design.

I got it at best buy, and also got the $80 4 year accidental replacement plan, which i have already used to replace a broken screen.

I have a Canon A560 myself, and love it.

Its not as nice as the S5, but IMO, Canon makes the best cameras out there...

Mine: canon powershot A640 - it's fantastic. I've owned a nikon coolpix 5400 and an older olympus and the canon is by far the best. I recommend at least investigating canons.

gonz, i really recommend you take look at www.dpreview.com . it'll have very extensive reviews for every camera you're considering, including shot-to-shot lag you said you're interested in minimizing. plus for each camera review it compares high-res pictures taken by that camera with pictures taken by the main competitors.

As far as a compact shooter goes: you can't go wrong with the Cannon Elf or Casio Exlim, most recent version always being the best best.

I'd personally get a Nikon D200 if I had my choice in cameras

Ahh.... I thought you were looking for a pocketable cam. In that case you're open to a whole new ballgame of stuff. I'll look at possibilities later tonight

This might help you though: http://www.steves-digicams.com/ That is probably one of the most in-depth review sites on the net, I always read up there before buying a new cam.

Also, everything PRIOR(meaning go backwards) to wtf.jpg in this gallery was shot with the predecessor of the Fuji cam you're considering. I believe it was a Fuji S602 Zoom (S602z).

I'd suggest, if you're going to purchase an expensive camera, to go with a Digital SLR instead of a prosumer camera with a fixed wannabe SLR lens. :P

The advantage is someday, aways away, you'll realize you're very limited to that focal range. an SLR allows you to later on purchase a new lens, say maybe a true macro, or perhaps a good telephoto lens, or maybe even a fisheye if you get artistic.

And you can get digital SLRs for around 500-600 now.
