On the one hand, this sounds noble, but on the other hand we give the great apes more value because of their similarity to us.

Just another example of egocentricity.

Huh?

The people who advocate that the Great Apes deserve rights do so on the basis that they're self-conscious beings and thus capable of experiencing suffering. (Personhood theory of Rights) If humans beings deserve rights then it is not much of a stretch to think that Great Apes deserve some rights too. What does the Personhood Theory of Rights have to do with egocentricity?

I have previously covered this in great depth.

Morality = proximity.

Proximity may equal geographic or genetic or emotional proximity.

Neighbor gets murdered = big deal.
Someone gets murdered  a thousand miles away = no big deal.

Bomb goes off at local mall = big deal.
Bomb goes off in Iraq = no big deal (if you are a westerner)

Spouse, child, sibling gets murderded = big deal
Second cousin twice removed gets murdered = no big deal.

Dolphin gets killed = big deal.
Shark gets killed = no big deal.

One million dead in Iraq.
Heath Ledger dead. :whoa:

Summation: Hurting those close to me or like me = immoral.

It is exactly the way the world works - and I am sure that is your system as well.

And please do not bring your private sex life into the discussion. :nono:

(I am pretty much a Rawlsian... so that is not my system of ethics.)

Do you have any evidence for this claim or is it just based on your observations and speculation?

In any case, you're conflating prescriptive ethics with descriptive ethics.

I just jizzed all over my computer screen.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

If I told you right now that your mom died, would you feel just as bad as if it was somebody you didn't know?

How is this relevant to ethics and morality?

Yes they are, but I'm not sure they knew what you meant.
