Gorillas should not be kept in cages for public viewing
    #8103738 -

I saw a video on "The World's Most Amazing Videos" today. A little kid fell 20 ft. into a gorilla cage at the zoo and was knocked unconscious. Everyone started screaming as a huge male silverback gorilla bounded toward the kid, who looked like he was dead. When it got there, though, it motioned to two other gorillas to back away from the child, then looked at the child, looked up at the crowd with a discerning gaze, and then began gently stroking the child. It looked up at the crowd with a look on its face like, "Is someone going to come and get him?" The gorilla had never had physical contact with any zookeepers because of its strength and unpredictability... When no one came down, it led the other gorillas inside, away from the outside cage, as if it were indicating it was safe for people to enter. It was so touching. How can we keep these beings on display for our entertainment? (Not to mention slaughtering them to the point of near-extinction?)

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Gorillas are amazing! Did you hear about the gorilla who asked for a pet cat, and when she got one she took really good care of it. When it died (escaped and got hit by a car) she was really distraught and cried about it.

I don't think it's right to cage anything. I can understand domestication of dogs because they're allowed to go out and whatnot, but to keep something, like a lizard, in a likee 2ft cage is horrible.

Also the gorilla in the book Ishmael taught the narrator about history and nature!

Do we really need zoos? I'm not educated on this, so I will hold back my opinion. If the main purpose of zoos is merely for entertainment, that is pretty sadistic.

Makes me think of clowns.

Quote:
The Great Ape Project: An Idea, A Book, An Organization

The idea is founded upon undeniable scientific proof that non-human great apes share more than genetically similar DNA with their human counterparts. They enjoy a rich emotional and cultural existence in which they experience emotions such as fear, anxiety and happiness. They share the intellectual capacity to create and use tools, learn and teach other languages. They remember their past and plan for their future. It is in recognition of these and other morally significant qualities that the Great Ape Project was founded. The Great Ape Project seeks to end the unconscionable treatment of our nearest living relatives by obtaining for non-human great apes the fundamental moral and legal protections of the right to life, the freedom from arbitrary deprivation of liberty, and protection from torture.

The book, which is the collective work of a group of scientists and scholars, is a multi-faceted analysis that compels readers to question the arbitrary denial of fundamental rights and protections to non-human great apes despite the morally significant characteristics they irrefutably possess. It demands a reflective consideration of extending basic protections to the non-human great apes and forces us to come face to face with the moral and ethical dilemmas of continuing to allow these unconscionable deprivations to exist.

The organization is an international group founded to work for the global removal of non-human great apes from the category of mere property, and for their immediate protection through the implementation of basic legal principles designed to provide these amazing creatures with the right to life, the freedom of liberty and protection from torture.

On the one hand, this sounds noble, but on the other hand we give the great apes more value because of their similarity to us.

Just another example of egocentricity.

The San Diego zoo is ensuring the survival of panda's while their habitat gets destroyed, so that's a good thing. Species who are endangered are often bred in zoo's and re-introduced to the wild. At least in most first-world countries, zoo's treat their critters humanely, and are concerned with nature as a whole. I'm pretty sure the san diego zoo does a lot for conservation.

are you saying their is a difference if the "main purpose" was for educating the public on animals?

How is that different? How do the intentions matter at all as to whether the confinement is moral?

This isn't a perfect world, and some endangered animals are better off in zoos/wildlife preserves in breeding programs than they would be in their "natural habitats" that are being slash-and-burned for farmland or where they are poached. I'm not saying the enclosures need to be small, however. What's your definition of confinement?

I will no longer go to the zoo. South Florida has a huge 'Metro-Zoo,' where the tigers used to be thrown horse carcasses, and where I personally witnessed a female trainer, early in the morning, being 'mean' to a baby elephant. Gorillas on view are beyond the pale.

Thanks for the link, Mushman.  I'm browsing the site, watching their videos and may pick up one of these books.

This is the tip of the iceberg. Ever been to a human prison? Ever been to a city? Ever been to church? Ever been to a job? Ever been to a bar? It's pointless to pick out little things and then ask why? Take in the big picture and then you will have all your answers.
