Life Being a Dream?
    #8097983 -

I don't understand life being referred to as a dream?

Does this basically refer to that all this is an illusionary state, of "all that is" being, eventually all this will be gone, thus what we perceive as reality is really just a dream, and once we realise this it is awakening from the dream?

Is it simply as a reference to awakening?

Basically, yes, it's referring to 'this' life, the material world, being illusory in nature. However, that's not to say it isn't real. Dreams are indeed real, however, only as finate and solid as one allows them to be through their choice of perception. Things get a lot more malleable and interested when you adopt the view of life being a 'dream' per se. Similar to the mindstate induced by the use of psychedelics. It's up to each individual to decide what's 'real' for them at any particular point in time, however, when once practices living the dream, it's hard to disregard the notion that there is much misunderstood (or not understood at all) by the majority of modern society.

In referring to life as a dream, it's more-so meaning that this isn't 'true' reality, or 'real' reality, if you catch my just. There are higher, and higher states that can be reached, each one a bit closer to the divine consciousness/will/intent; be it God, Gaia, the Universe, Existence, Wakan Tanka, etc. The theory's the same in essence: we're only experiencing a minute portion of reality as it truly exists, and a very limited and restricted portion at that. Unless of course, steps are taken to raise your energy/perception level up and above the doldrums that most are used to percieving as the sole existence.

As a reference to awakening... awakening would be the realization of the divine consciousness; the higher states. Lifting yourself above this dream.

Do not take it to mean this world isn't real... that will cause a lot of hell for you. This experience is without a doubt real, just not even close to as real as it gets... possibly the least real experience there is, but that's all relative to the personal subject in question.

I definatley see this as real yet not real.

It changes, it will be gone, thus is not real, what is real is what is always there, always aware.

Life is pretty weird man and I have often thought of it as a dream.

It is just as plausible as any other theory about existance almost more so,lol.

There is an old hindu proverb, I believe it goes.

"perhaps men are the dreams of the gods, or perhaps the gods are the dreams of men."

The real question is... Can you become lucid?

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

To bring up some old incubus lyrics from their song New Skin:

"until the 20th century, reality was everything humans could touch, smell, see,
and hear.
since the inital publication of the charged electromagnetic spectrum, humans
learned that what they can touch, smell, see, and hear...is less than one
millionth of reality."

To me, understand all thats outside of our unobservable reality could result in incredible control of reality.

As for the dream... well our brain filters out soo much of whats there, i've even been told that we can only take a small amount of stimuli at once without blocking a great deal of excess stimuli out and this is within what we can observe!

The idea of life being a dream stemmed initially from the old Mystery schools of antiquity. Some fragments still survive in working forms of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Cabbala, however, one has to realize, that these schools of thought intentionally concealed their truths behind symbolism within any document used for the 'common folk'. You either had to be initiated to learn the higher truths, or you had to be amazingly adept and abstract-thinking enough to interpret the mass of hidden meanings given in any given religious doctrine. When it comes down to it, they all essentially teach the same thing, it's only the story that changes. A good place to start if you want to learn more about this is with the author Manly P. Hall, preferably the book 'The Secret Teachings of All Ages'. However, all of his books provide the same sort of insight in ancient (and modern) religion. I highly reccommend it. It clears up all the haze existing between seperate religious sects...

I think it refers to the idea that we are not completely aware and conscious. In a dream, you don't know that your dreaming, all this weird, impossible stuff happens and you don't question it, you just accept it. Waking life is like this most of the time as well. We are surrounded by the miracle of the universe, but most of the time our minds are wandering along in this dream like state thinking everything is "normal". Then you have a lucid moment and look around you and you realize that nothing is normal everything you see is actually impossible and a total miracle, those moments feel like waking up from a dream.

ah the abundance of pedantry displayed in these forums ennumerates the causaulity of age to impotence in parabolic form.

what im trying to say is, you're probably going to die somewhere that sucks, so if you survive the turning process into starlight, are able to smile at the thought of the deep sleep, you might just be able to rest peacefully in your flesh sack until it vibrates into the 5d

Only people who talk about life being a dream are college undergrads with a chip on their shoulder.

I believe life is like a dream in another way. Like when you are dreaming and experience extreme fear or terror or even dying, then wake up and say, "Oh, thank God, it was just a dream. But it seemed so REAL!". Well, when you die, I believe your higher, spiritual self will say the same thing: "Oh, thank God, it was just a dream. But it seemed so REAL!".

I don't like disagreeing with you but many teachers who have studied under people such as harilal poonjaji have called life a dream

haha, it's all good. Not much need for a philosophy forum if we all shared the same opinions on life.

If life strikes one as being like a dream, doesn't seem to me that they are living.

Dreams are mirrors of the opposite.

When you dream asleep, you mirror your waking life.
Then when you dream awake, you mirror your sleeping life.

That's all. It's a process of relating, and the two are intrinsically one.

Liberation comes with the realization that they are one in nature, which is when you begin to see that dreams and reality form the one thing that makes you unique in this world, experience.

I believe quite to opposite!

Get caught up in the "realess" and what do you get? Nothing but outside influences dictating your life. That is not living.
