Room Temp and incubator
    #804399 - 08/08/02 09:57 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I'm a newbie and I wondered...do I need to worry about an incubator for colonization if my average room temp varies from 78 to 80 degrees? If not, I'm assuming that I'll just keep them in a dark place without any heating or humidity modifications.

You definately don't need one, but it couldn't hurt. Without one it will probably just take a few days longer. If you have the space or inclination I would definately make one though. The first time I did jars they took about a month to colonize, the temp was probably closer to 70 though. I then made this incubator and the cakes finished colonizing in about 2 1/2 week. Good luck.

incubators are okay but i think they are a little unecessary. just find a place high in a closet or in a heated area to stick the jars. i find that high in my closet the temp naturally reaches 80 - 85 degrees. They always colonize perfectly. If you're looking for fast colonization times then rye is the way to go. It is much faster than brf.
