Incubator on the fritz

Okay, my friend just went to put his wbs jars in his ghetto incubator and the damn fish tank heater is on the fritz! Since it's summer and the temps hover between 78-80 degrees in his house day and night, he decided that he would probably be okay without the incubator. Do you guys think this will work okay? And how much longer do you tink it will take to colonize at these temps? Thanks.

The ideal colonization temp is 84-86 F, per Stamets in "The Mushroom Cutivator", and it seems that most people's experience supports this, and it is the temp that is often recommended......as temp lowers, colonization slows somewhat, but your temperature drop is not extreme, so it should only slow it down by a few more days. In fact in the "Magic Mushroom Growers Guide", this statement is made:
"Colonizing the substrate at 80 degrees F. is the ideal temperature for several reasons. First, the mycelium will grow faster and the substrate will be colonized in the shortest amount of time. Secondly, when the cakes are removed from the jars, initiation of fruiting is enhanced by shocking the cakes with a temperature drop, lower CO2 levels, and light. "
So you should be OK with 78-80, if you can't get your incubator fixed fast, but 84-86 F is still ideal.

Thanks Mike. I've got to get Stament's book. I just noticed that Anno also recomends 70-80 degrees for colonizing in his "pf tek for simple minds," go figure. I guess that they will be fine. Thanks for the excellent answer. Five shrooms for you.

Demiurge,
Thanks very much, I appreciate it. Now that you mention it, you also jogged my memory that Anno recommended that temp.....if he said it, you know that it will work fine. BTW, re your other post, I would think that your friend will be delighted with the Taz. My friend's evaluation of them was that they were very prolific, plus a great experience. If casing, they can often be put right into the frutiing chamber without even incubating the casing for a couple of days, they are that aggressive.
