BLUE SHROOMS ID
    #799454 - 08/06/02 08:49 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

i found these 2 blue mushrooms this morning, they were all baby blue, with some darker blue rings, a concave cap and darker blue gills, the stem was pale blue, it left like bright blue ink all over my fingers. the cap was about 2 inches in diameter. it was one of the coolest shrooms i ever saw. im in south west mississippi, does anyone have a clue what it could be?

While, for most mushrooms, your description would be far short of what is needed for an ID, there are not many blue mushrooms. As Mr Mushrooms stated, Lactarius indigo is one of the very few possibilities. Here are a couple of additional features you should observe to confirm the ID. First, the latex (milk-like material which oozes from cuts) should stain the mushroom greenish. Second, if you break the stem with your fingers, it should break like chalk - it should not be fibrous.

Lactarius indigo is considered to be one of the best Lactarius for eating. Be sure to verify the ID as mentioned above before you try eating it.

Here's a couple links to other photos for verification:

Yep, sounds like an Indigo Milky. I find them sometimes. How do you prepare these for eating, Im very interested in trying them? Also, are they considered a rare find?

I doubt you'd like them at all... The taste is really bland at first, then it is like an explosion of bitterness. Not the best food mushroom.

i washed 2 and coarsely chopped them and cooked with scrambled eggs, the taste was pretty good and it gave the eggs a greenish color. some of my friends thought i was gonna die from eating them, but the few that tried it liked it. i found a HUUUGE one this morning on my walk but left it, they are really some amazing fungi

You realize, of course, that they are mycorrhizal, not saprophytic. If you have succes in culturing them and getting them to fruit, let us know.
