South East UK - Blue Shroom ID ?

Hi Guys.

Out walking today, I came across these shrooms:





Anyone got any idea what they could be?

They were found growing in long grass, in a clearing in some woods. Hmm...
They've got a definite membrane growing over the caps, and are really slimy.
They're VERY blue, but it doesn't seem to be bruising. After half an hour or so, the break in the stem of the largest shroom doesn't seem to have any colour change.

I'm taking a print at the moment, but I'm expecting the spores to come out a rusty brown colour, as the gills seem to turn this colour as the mushrooms get larger.

I'm not really expecting these to be active, but I'd be interested to know what they could be. If they're not psilocybes, with the exception of the spores, they're doing a pretty good impression of them.

Hrmmm... I am not sure on these but I'm going to take a guess and say that they're Hypholomas... I've got no clue what species. I can almost promise you they're not active...

Those are some very brilliant mushrooms you have found!...

Maybe they could be a type of Pluteus..

Phyl, I am not certain about the identity of your mushrooms,
But i am very interested to hear what others have to say.

I will start guessing once you reveal the color of the spore print.

They appear to be Stropharia/Psilocybe caerulea....  Inactive but cool looking :smile: .

Those look similar to Stropharia cyanea (=Stropharia caerulea, Psilocybe caerulea).

As I suspected, the spore print came out a rusty red/brown colour. The colour reproduction in this photo is pretty good.



My first thoughts were of psilocybe caeruela, as a few of you have suggested.
I've heard a few reports of people finding these recently, but surely these would have black/purple spores?

I found some Stropharia caerulea here in Seattle a couple weeks ago. Took prints and they turned out chocolate brown in color, not very purplish. Should have pics in a week or so after I get my film developed.....

I think I may have found a match...
Psilocybe Pseudocyanea (Stropharia Pseudocyanea)

I found this great web site:

The description in Stamets Mushrooms of the world is also spot on, although his picture is of much paler mushrooms.

The spore print colour rules out the Psilocybe genus.
It's a Cortinarius and may be poisonous!

OK, with that spore print I'll fall in with the Cortinarius crowd.

It looks to be a member of subgenus Myxacium, similar to Cortinarius salor.

In general, Cortinarius are very difficult to ID accurately. Very few professional mycologists I know will attempt an ID of them beyond subgenus, at least not in the field.

The print is not rusty brown. Stropharia/psilocybe spores range from brown to purplish brown to nearly purple black. Cortinarious veils are cobwebby, not membranous as seen in the young specimen. Stropharia (Psilocybe) pseudocyana is the most likely identification.

Everyone thinks it's something different :frown:
Between here and other forums, I've been told they're DEFINATELY from about 6 separate genus.
If only everyone could be right...

Personally, I'm going with pseudocyana on the basis of this photo (which I previously linked to), and because the description in Stamets mushrooms of the world is absoloutly 100% spot on. 

When I first saw the mushrooms I also instantly thought stropharia, the only thing that put me off was the spores.  I know the spores aren't black / dark purple, but they could be describes as purplish brown, which is exactly how Stamets describes them.

Anyway, I'm also sending samples to Kew gardens mycology department, so hopefully soon I'll have a 100% positive ID, along with a toxicological evaluation.
