Big Contest, and ID help.
    #802204 - 08/07/02 11:55 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Hey eveyone! I need an ID on two mushrooms. Almost sure they are nothing special, but one can only hope..

First two...WHITE spore prints. Round patch of small reddish scales in center with scales lightly covering the rest of the cap/Sweet/anise like smell. No veil apparent. Darkening at the base of stems. Gyms? Small Gyms, Some other GYM, Honey mushrooms, Jackolanterns, ?? I coulda sworn they were honey mushrooms, but now I?m not so sure.

And, to make things even more exciting, I?ve included a nifty little contest, EVEN INCLUDING a PRIZE! The third pic is of a few mushrooms found on a log, left there by a possible fellow shroom hunter. Spore print consumed by maggots. Most likely white to brown. If you correctly identify this mushroom, I?ll personally send it to you, maggots, stench, and all! That is of course if they are not active, nor illegal to mail... Yes, you, you just might have the opportunity to chew through the any remaining stem material, maggot feces, and HUGE MUSHROOM / ENVELOPE STUFFED __>MAGGOTS!!!!! MMMM, mouthwatering.*

*Shipping and handling, tax, and lawyer fees not included. Please paypal me for $2,000. Allow six to eight weeks for delivery. Contest rules may be subject to change at any time. Contest ends 8/8/02.

The first two photos are Armillaria tabescens, Ringless Honey Mushrooms. Edible, although those look a bit old. If you decide to eat them, make sure you cook them thoroughly - they frequently cause stomach upset if not adequately cooked.

Gymnopilus would have an orange to rust-brown colored spore print. Omphalotus (Jack O'Lanterns) would have a white to yellow spore print, but the caps would be smooth, not scaly (with obvious fibrils) as these have. Also, the gills would be very much more orangeish in color.

As far as the "contest shrooms", they're just nasty.

Happy mushrooming!

They are quite popular in Europe, but I agree that they are not the best edible around. They get very slimy if you boil them like most books suggest. I prefer to stir&fry them for a bit longer than other mushrooms.
