De-grafting
    #8016072 - 02/13/08 12:58 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I don't even have any grafted plants atm but always wondered which plants can be de-grafted and rooted, Lophophora sp, Ariocarpus sp, Obregonia denegrii? and how to go about it, with Lophophora for example, will they form the carrot shaped root?

they wont get the tap root, but they will, in time, get a nice fat root system. tap roots actually are not really all that good for growth....thats why people trim it when they repot, more smaller roots to take in more stuff=faster growth.

every species is different, most are fairly easy. ariocarpus are not very easy to re root, but doable. some astros are difficult, others easy.....really depends on species. Lophophora are fairly easy, just slow.

so basically, let them callous like a columnar cactus and root it? the more roots instead of the tap root thing makes complete sense, more nutes can be absorbed. so i one is wondering if a Loph. has ever been grafted it's just a matter of pulling it out of the medium and observing the root system?

yep. but with things like lophs arios astros etc...dont water them at ALL until they have roots. my astros i leave out of soil in indirect sun until they start putting out roots, then plant and still dont water for a month or 3.

cuttings can have HUGE*** roots like a tap root, but you can tell by where the root changes to plant....that area is easy to see if its grown smooth or a new root poked out.

caespitosa on the other hand has a shit load of roots everywhere seed grown or not. still distinguishable if smaller.
