IP Address Question
#7995856 - 02/08/08 11:20 AM (15 years, 11 months ago) |

So I'm a subscriber to Major League Baseballs' MLB.tv package every season, which gives me access to any MLB game that is being played live on my computer. Great service, I love it and would probably die w/out it.
But MLB has these fucked up blackout restrictions that are based on a team's defined "Sphere of Influence", which as far as I can tell was established by having monkeys throw darts at a map. It makes no fucking sense. But thats another story...
The crux of the matter is that I'm told MLB.tv does it's blackout restrictions by IP address. So, say if my IP shows me being in Chicago the system will know to block out Chicago games.
The question is how can I change my IP address so that MLB's system thinks I am in Bangladesh, or somewhere else w/out an MLB franchise?
I realize this is probably easy, but I am technologically inept.
Thanks.

More info please.
Is this easy to do? Does it require extra hardware, or just software?
Will my ISP mind if I do this?
Can I set it to anywhere, or is it just random?
Got a website with more information?

there are proxy server websites. some popular ones are hidebehing and tor park. u simply go to these websites and put in the url of where u are trying to go to, and u see that website on their website, and the website u are trying to visit sees the proxy's ip. u may ask around for a good proxy as i don't know which ones have good speeds or won't kill your pc w/ pop-ups.

I guess a proxy server would work for your purpose, but it's going to be almost impossible to find one that can stream the video at a decent resolution. Maybe get a shell account from a Canadian company? Prices could be from about $2.00-$5.00 a month.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind paying the little bit at all.
What do you mean a shell account?
Excuse my ignorance. I'm really not stupid, just clueless about computer technology...

People use shell accounts to make IRC bots, but you can use one to create a ssh tunnel to take on a different IP address. It's pretty simple to do, but someone may have a better idea. You may be able to find a decent, free shell account also. Here is a rough guide, but instead of bit torrent you will be using an internet browser/ different shell account.

You can also get a program called No-IP or IP Annonymity.
It will block your IP address from being read.
However, if you have a static IP address it (your ip) changes every time you reboot your computer.
You want to get ahold of your dynamic IP address (your ISP provider)
And then you can have it masked or possibly even change it.
To access these settings type your IP address in your internet explorer bar and hit enter. It will send you to a login screen and you'll probably have to contact your ISP provider for the default password. It might be admin if your using linksys.
Then you'll be able to toodle with it.
If you need help, I can come over and show ya what I'm talkin about since I am like 4 blocks away.

How to forward your traffic over SSH:
It requires access to one unix host somewhere out on the net. If you don't have a shell account, google for free shells.
First, ssh into the remote host with the -D flag.
$ ssh -D3128 alan.rockefeller@whitehouse.org
Once you authenticate, go to your browser preferences, then to advanced, then to network settings. Set up the network proxy to be a SOCKS proxy on 127.0.0.1 port 3128. Once you do that, all your web traffic will be forwarded to the remote host using very strong encryption, then leave unencrypted from there. The traffic still goes through the internet in the clear, but at least any packet sniffers at your location (network monitoring group, feds, wardrivers, etc) won't be able to see anything but your DNS requests.
If you don't want your DNS requests to go out in the clear, you can use a squid proxy on the remote host, but that takes 3 extra minutes to set up. I use an /etc/hosts file that has a few "questionable" sites (like this one) and let the DNS go out like normal for most of my requests.

That is incorrect. Using a proxy or tunneling your traffic through ssh will work just fine. You don't know what you're talking about, do you?

Justin, you are incorrect. Robbyberto, no need to be snarky although I know it's annoying when people contradict your accurate advice with false information and an authoritative tone. This thread has some good suggestions, please stay civil and on-topic so I don't have to lock it.

Do they just check ISP region? Because I can use my MLB.tv package from any one of several computers around the city that I'm at on a daily basis...

If we cannot verify that a user is within the viewing area for a particular event, we will enforce the blackout.
