bulk coir substrate users chime in.. Whats your average yield?
    #7866277 -

Just curious.. Im thinking about trying it, but I have searched and cannot find an average yield for coir substrate and casings, even though i have seen some impressive results from the few pics I have seen..

How do you guys feel about it.. Coir users only though.. post a pic or link something.. I just wanna see some good results from this substrate..

Back when I cased grain with coir in a 12x8 baking pan, i ended up with about 2 ounces over two flushes.

I'm pretty emotional about coir.

My coir/castings @ ~60/20 with 10% verm and gypsum, spawned 3:1 with a quart of rye, yields around one dry ounce per tray on the first flush... a little less on subsequent flushes. I like it because it's easy to use, and easy to come by.

wow... straw and dung just seem nasty though.. thats why I started growing.. So I didnt have to look in shit... haha.. I saw a few other fotos and coir seems to really make big flushes.. alot over brf.. at least from what I have seen..

keep em commin

ok I can see where people would think poo is nasty(even though it isnt), but what is even slightly nasty about straw? the only real reason to use coir instead of poo is if you can't easily get poo.

what you should be asking is what kind of B.E. people are getting from coir. because the "this many ounces in this many flushes per tray" doesn't really mean anything. there isn't mention of the size of tray, substrate depth ect. if you could get a few people relaying their biological efficiency on coir then you'd have some good information

I get the feeling were going to have a "flush" of information on it in the near future...

Doc's grows look tempting, don't they?

5 quarts hydrated pasteurized coir (about 1/3rd of a brick to about 6 cups of water) - with a generous handful of used coffee grounds thrown in and 2 quarts of wbs based spawn (probably overkill but that's how i roll )

laid out in a small cat litter tray... gives me a substrate block of about 9"x11"x3.5"... cased with mgmc

average first flush with an average pinset = about 1.5oz dry, have gotten 1 though, have gotten 2 also..

average second flush adds about another oz dry

third and fourth flushes, if i bother, add about another half oz dry each, usually in the form of a couple 6-8" tall big ones

this is with soaking the substrate block between each flush to rehydrate.

just what I asked is what I want to know... I dont want to get into a debate over what I should be asking... either you can answer it or not...

So far, good results are comming from this... I just may try this..

o yeah.. in my opinion, if it came out of an animals butt, its nasty.. shit is shit.. if it works it works, but I would rather not be having fun with shite when I can get great results coir... which it looks like I might be able too

coir's nice. like all bulk subs it provides surface area for your mycelium to pin and provides nuts at the same time.
coir is relativly a common material and easy to use. just toss a brick ina a bucket and fill with hot water. 30 minutes later, its all poofy. and ready for pasteurization or use.
additives are great in coir.
coffee grounds are wonderful along with gypsum

In nature do you see cubes growing off coconuts or of turds?

Thats a though though... coconuts with cubes growing off it... pity I can't get coconut with their husk on :frown:

To case, or not to case is the next question.
Doc says he waits until the mycelium pokes through the coir, patches, waits until it pokes through evenly, then puts it directly into the FC. No casing on top of the coir.

Anybody who's tried casing and not casing? Preference?

you dont see them growing on birdseed or brf in the wild either... just a thought.. haha

from what I have been reading, the only thing that the coir lacks is nitrogen, so it seems that is a very good bulk sub... at least for those who do not wish to have shit on their hands... I will use that for outdoor grows (which I used to do in Wa with my boys.. what fun to come back a year later to a lb. dry growing in a lil patch...)

has anyone ever done a side by side comparison of coir and other bulk subs, when it comes to nutrient content?

I could imagine casing would help against contams and give it extra moisture for pinning... I have seen a few cats do it without casing on here, and wow...

Would you wait until the coir is colonized (same as mentioned before), then case with 50/50 and toss in the FC...

Or, put your spawn & coir down, case, put in the FC, and keep spraying until something shows?

with any sunstrate, dont induce pinning without having ur substrate fully colonized... no casing.. nada... spawn, let it take over the bulk sub, case, incubate, patch, fc...

The only advantages that hpoo and cpoo have on coir is :
1.) Poo is many times cheaper than coir. ? Even when it is purchased; I have been sold 20lbs of pre-collected hpoo for maybe a 1 euro more than a brick of coir.

2.) You get to go on an adventure in the great outdoors when you use poo. You get to meet some very nice people(and you might even find a fellow grower!). Plus, as an added bonus, if your in the right season, you usually find some extra specimens to print and add to your collection.

3.)Coir doesn't form the beneficial bacterial symbiosis that is characteristic of poo. Coir and fresh poo might perform the same nutritionally, but aged cow poo that has been carefully pasteurized is just marvelous.
