Lepiota (?) ID help, please

Picked these beauties in the woods (mixed) in Maine this weekend, near Bar Harbor.

I?m pretty sure they are a Lepiota, but I can?t figure out which species.

Distinctive features:
White spore print
Free gills
Persistent, double edged, collar-like partial veil
Large (2") basal bulb (No volva or universal veil)
Scales/warts on cap and basal bulb


The larger of the two has a 4" cap and a 5" stipe.

I?d say L. procera, except for the missing umbo, but I?m not convinced yet.

Anybody else seen this guy before?

Reddish bruising. . . .you're definitely in the right category. I see what you mean, they're close to procera if not definitely so. Umbos, IMO, are tough to use for definitive ID for many species; It seems like environmental conditions can alter some predispositions to umbo formation. That's just me, though.

I think you hit all the major rule outs, it would be in my belly by now

It doesn't match any Lepiotas very well because it's *not* a Lepiota. It's an Amanita, similar to Amanita atkinsoniana, which is listed in my guide as inedible. Definitely don't eat it. To ensure full ID we need to know if the spores are amyloid (got any Meltzer's Solution?) and probably a little microscope work.

Not all Amanitas have a volva. Some (this is an excellent example) have a prominent basal bulb. The scales on the cap are remnants of the universal veil. Also, I note that the first and second photos both clearly show a fragile skirtlike ring at the very top of the stalk. The appearance of this ring makes it clear that this is not a Lepiota.

You have found a type of Amanita mushroom!~
I know this by first observeing the bulbous base,
Then by noticeing the white gills.

Ahh Maine..I have such fond memories of your state,
I usually tell people that it is my favorite place in the U.S.

I guess that's what they mean by lepitotas having a "moveable" ring, which this one is definitely not. The photos I have now seen of Amanita atkinsoniana convince me that you are right. That species did not show up in any of my guidebooks, nor did anything similar. Which book did you find it in?

I don't have any Melzer's solution, and would appreciate any advice on where to get some (the C.H. in it makes it hard to come by.)

Thanks for the help, and don't worry, I don't eat anything until I'm sure (as sure as one can get.)

I recalled some very similar specimens I had seen in Mushrooms of North America by Roger Phillips. It's listed with "limited availability" on page 3 of the mushroom hunting books here on the shroomery. While it lacks keys, he gives good photographs and descriptions of the species.

As far as getting Melzer's, you're correct - it's not easy to get. Try talking to a local professional mycologist to see if you can get a small amount. 10 ml should last years.

Glad to see you didn't eat it. Amanita is not a good genus to experiment in.
