IFO,BUP, VOB File Extensions for DVD
    #7836710 - 01/05/08 06:06 PM (16 years, 27 days ago)

So I downloaded a full DVD in a torrent, and all the chapters came in odd file extensions I've never seen before; .IFO, .BUP, and .VOB

What are these? How can I play these? Is there a program out there that will convert these to MP4 format for me or should I just leave them as they are? I usually use PSPware to convert to MP4 but I don't thing it deals with IFO,BUP,or VOB type files, just ordinary stuff like MPG,MPEG,AVI,etc.

Any suggestions?

These are the files that encode a DVD content. IFOs contain the menu data. BUPs are backups of the IFOs. VOBs contain the video, audio, and subpictures. You need DVD playback software to play the files. VLC is free and should work.

Is there a way I can convert to MPG,MPEG,or MP4 so it can be played w/ windows media or quicktime?

I will, but it'd be nice to have it in a format that I an ipod would take.

The data in a VOB is an mpeg2 program stream with most of the content encoded in private elementary streams. You can use the export wizard in VLC to transcode.
