playing burned DVD's on xbox - HELP
    #3251449 - 10/19/04 02:27 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

*EDITED*

I figured out how to burn DVDs, here's the new problem.....

Ok, here's the scenario. I have an Xbox with the DVD plackback kit. A few months back I bought a bootlegged DVD (Fah. 9/11), the dvd played fine in my xBox. In light of this, I thought I was golden when it came to playing burned dvds in my xbox. Now that I have this dvd burner, I attempted to make my first dvd copy. I copied the ISO file to my harddrive using DVDshrink, removed all extra garbage, then burned the ISO with mydvd's burning software.

Why does one DVD play and the other one doesn't?? They are both 4x DVD-Rs. Do you know if there's an extra step I need to take in order to make it work in my Xbox? I realize that Xbox cannot read cd'rs. but that fact that it did play a dvd-r i have, I don't understand why it won't play the one I just burned.

If I bought something comparable to this at walmart, would it alleviate this bullshit problem?

http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PROFRAME&PROD_ID=1003199#

Here's the stats on the two discs in question:

Fah. 9/11 - plays fine - 4x speed

Root folder on disk: 'Video_TS'
Files in Folder:

Video_TS
Video_TS.BUP
Video_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_1

Caddyshack - Will not play in Xbox, plays on computer - 4x speed

Root folder on disk: 'Video_TS'
Files in Folder:

Video_TS.BUP
Video_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1
VTS_01_2
VTS_01_3
VTS_01_4
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_1

Thanks All!

Original Post:

My friend just got an external DVD burner yesterday. And we're in dire need of some help! Here's the specs: It's an IOMEGA 16x dvd writer. It came with sonic my dvd, and hotburn pro software. Obviously this software will not let us burn copyrighted dvds. I did a little searching, and ended up downloadind the following programs: dvdshrink, IMG tools, dvd decrypter, and daemon tools.

Here's my question to you, how do YOU burn your copyrighted dvds? I tried using dvdshrink, and then IMG tools to burn the ISO file to dvd, but the ending file was only 333mb, seemed way to small? The movie was caddyshack. This stuff is blowing my mind for some reason. Any input would be so much appreciated.

Thanks!  :peace:

Find a copy of DVD X Copy Platinum ver 4. It's no longer made but it's not hard to find using any good P2P.

It works great!

use dvdshrink - it'll handle 99% of all protected dvds, but every once in awhile you'll come across a dvd that dvdshrink cant handle - for those, use dvddecrypter: http://www.dvddecrypter.com

oh, and dvd x copy sucks compared to dvdshrink. dvdshrink/dvddecrypter are both free and solid applications.

edit: didnt see that you already are using dvdshrink. I recommend using nero with it - it'll automatically de-CSS, compress, and then send the file over to nero to burn. Real easy stuff. check this interactive guide out: http://www.dvdshrink.info/fulldisk_basic.php

it'll explain everything. let me know if you run into trouble - I pretty much have this stuff down

What's not to "trust"?

It works and works well.

Does the DVD you made play okay on your computer and/or standalone DVD players?

Well, I just got back from Wal-Mart (gotta love the 24hour supercenter center). I spent $40 on an Apex DVD player, got the cheapest one I could find.... I got home, plugged it in, and boom, the DVD played. Conclusion: Xbox sucks for playing DVD-R's....

Anyone wanna buy an Xbox and some games?

for whatever reason, dvdxcopy dvds do not play in a large number of dvd-players while dvdshrink is very universal. plus, you have more options with dvdshrink & you dont have to do all that keygen/cracking business.

dvdshrink > dvdxcopy

My xbox had trouble playing burned dvds until I got a modchip.

I've never heard that and have never seen it happen. Nor do I personally know anyone who hasn't been able to play a copy made using DVD X Copy.

well, then you're lucky - I've seen it happen twice. and you're likely to encounter this problem as Hollywood copyright protections are updated while dvdxcopy remains the same.

free and often-updated dvdshrink > illegal, outdated dvdxcopy

I'd be interested in trying one. As recently as this week I did a few copies of new releases.

Any you might suggest for a test? (good movies of course)

the problems I've seen have to do with hardware (dvd players) that cannot not read dvdxcopy (but yet read dvdshrink with no problem). There is an incomplete list of dvd players that are not compatible with dvdxcopy dvds - I can post that when I find it. The list is much longer than that of dvdshrink. The list is posted on either www.afterdawn.com or www.doom9.net - I forget.

a wide-range of compatibility is a good thing - that is, if you bring your dvds to friends' houses or plan on getting a new dvd player in the future.

as for exact, big name dvd titles that dvdxcopy cannot de-CSS, I am not sure. You have to keep in mind that Hollywood encryption/copy-right protection technology is ever evolving, therefore the applications that decrypt and remove such protections must also evolve - kinda like anti-virus applications - they must be updated. Dvdxcopy is not longer continued and will not be sufficient. Dvdshrink, on the other hand, will continue to be free and updated. That was the point I tried to make.

plus, I like options. dvdshrink simply provides more.
