dvd +/- depends on your dvd burner. if it is newish, either should work.
use k3b if you run gnu/*nix
or [url=http://isohunt.com/download.php?mode=bt&id=6435219]nero[url] if you run m$

I could never get k3b to work under Ubuntu...
I had to switch back to m$ for NeroVision

An IFO file is used by the DVD player to display the menus, etc. The BUP is a backup copy of the IFO file by the same name. The VOB files are the actual video streams. If the DVD is protected by CSS, the VOB data will be scambled. If you have the original DVD, you can get the title keys from the DVD to descrable the VOB content. If you do not have the original DVD, you will have to crack the encryption or look up the title keys on the net.
For software, I use a large collection of tools to work with digital video. I use transcode, mplayer/mencoder, ffmpeg, and some custom tools that I wrote myself to rip the DVDs and decode/demux the streams. I use final cut pro studio to edit, recompress, and burn.

Yes. I do it all the time, in fact 95% of all my TV watching is .avi on DVD and CD discs.
All you need is a stand alone Divx player. You can mod an X-Box to do this, or buy one. I use the Phillips DVP642. Its cheap, and old. It doesn't play everything but it does play most things. If you search a bit you will find slightly more expensive ones that have better compatibilities.

since this thread is here, ima ask a quick question. I ripped one of my movies and in the file i stored it in are .ifo and .vob files, the dvd files. Now usually i would go to dvdshrink and open the file that contains these, and drag the title1 to the dvd compilation box, but this file will not show a title1, wierd? So, my question is, what can i use to make this into a dvd that will play in my dvd player?
thanks

Are you certain that the title you want is title 1? Not often, but sometimes, the DVD will use one of the other title tracks (there are 99 of them) for the main content of the DVD. Play the DVD in a regular player, start the movie, and check to see what title is playing.

The titles are VIDEO_TS.BUP, VTS_01_0.BUP - VTS_10_0.BUP VIDEO_TS.VOB, and a bunch of misc VTS_XX_X.VOB VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01_0.IFO - VTS_10_0.IFO
They are all associated with Nero now. I just need to find some time to get some discs and burn it and ill repost. You think those titles are legit tho?

The filenames are set by the DVDROM standard and will be the same on every DVD video DVD that follows the standard. The easiest way to tell if you have a good rip or not is to open the VIDEO_TS directory from a software DVD player and see if it will play or not.
