how long for honey water germination???
    #782809 - 07/28/02 07:24 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Hey I was just wondering......when making a jar of honey water, is it possible to put TOO much honey? Will the spores not germinate if the solution has too much honey?
What is a good honey water recipe that colonizes fast....say for 300ml?
Thanks.

sorry just a newbie here as well, but i thinkt he main problem is you might have the honey start to carmalize. I have always seen teks that say to add 1 Tablespoon per pint just enough to have a light yellow color. im sure there are some vets that might be able to help you a little more

okay, despite how simple it may seem, honeywater can be difficult. not because there is any rocket science there, but because it does take practice to consistantly turn out good product, and be able to identify contamination in the jar.

yes you can put too much honey in the water, it will kill the mycelium. but, it takes a lot more to kill the mycelium than most people use.

ready honey water looks like cheap american beer.

caramelization is often made worse by the use of tap water, also salts or other chemicals tend to catalize caramelization. you can tell you have caramelization when you see slimy floaties that weren't there before sterilization. some is acceptable, again it takes experiance. some people confuse caramelized honey for growing mycelium.

some mushroom species take considerable time to germinate to a visible degree. don't throw out the experiment for at least ten days. most cubensis will be visible in about five days.

Thanks mickey_rourke for that link. Iread though it, but it did not specify specific amounts of water or honey.

Thanks tchyted.... I have a honey water that does not look caramelized, but it's been 5 days and I don't see the spores germinating. It's doesn't look too dark. It looks yellow and light enough that I can see the spores at the bottom, but nothing is happening.

What is like an average in quantities of water and honey for a good mixture?

What's the longest that it would take spores to show first signs of germination in honey water?

anybody??? ....it's been 5 days so far and the spores look the same. How long should it take for first signs of germination?

Mine take about 3 days from spores, 3 or 4 hours from mycelium transfer. It is quite hard to see the mycelium alot of the time. Hold the container that it is in up above your head and look through the bottom of the container. This is the only way I can see it with mine, I don't know whether its because of the conatiner or light conditions.

If you still can't see anything, just wait.
