So apparently I'm getting a bass for Christmas

Or some sort of musical instrument, but either way my parents told me if I got elss quantity of gifts than everyone else, it wasn't because they loved me less, but because I'm getting an instrument

It's a cool idea, the bass is a mood setter, it'd be an appropriate instrument for me to learn

What's a good one to start out with?

what is and what should never be by led zeppelin

also, give the lemon song, also by zep, a listen. but instead of focusing on the guitar playing, check out the bass playing. john paul jones plays his ass off on that song.. especially during the slow part in the middle.

the lemon song is the song that made me decide to be a bassist.

The best way to find a good instrument is to go to a store and just try stuff out, don't look for quality, look for preference. If you have a friend that plays the bass bring them along to help answer questions (make sure you find someone who really knows what they are talking about).

If you are serious about pursuing the bass then I would suggest skipping a cheap bass, and get a mid-ranged one. I know many people who spent 100/200 dollars that end up getting ride of them once they get a better one.

and don't skimp on an amp, a good amp will make everything sound better.

That's the only aspect of the bass I'm worried about, because an amp is almost essential, but I would only be practicing in my dorm

an amp is only essential if you will be playing with other people, if the dorm is loud, or playing a show. If you are just beginning I would save the amp for later.

Playing bass without at least some kind of practice amp sucks.

Get one of these, I love mine.

And yeah, save the bigger amp for when you need to be as loud as the drums.

I just got a Peavey Grind Bass, 6 strings and I love it. I recommend listening to Les Claypool, he's what got me inspired to play. I saw him in concert, he's a beast.
