yeah..what grade is the diamond? that is quite expensive for a ½ carat...let alone just white gold. you can find maybe a VS2 k-m with a platinum 950 setting for the same price.

if the grade is vs or vvs colour d-j then it's worth it.

my husband bought me a typical "american" engagement ring with a diamond with a tiffany setting plus an eternity wedding ring. it's not very common in europe to buy girls rings with diamonds as an engagement ring (usually just a promise/wedding ring that's a solid gold band) and sometimes i get people staring at my hands. it's quite annoying - but it's what he gave me, though, i would be simply happy with a regular wedding band.

it's interesting to see how much research he did in regards to buying my ring - he knows quite a bit about colour, clarity and cut of diamonds. he made sure that both my engagement ring and wedding ring came with GIA certificates for the diamond. but, i suppose cause I come from the US, he felt that he needed to get me something "acceptable."

i've read threads about how you want to buy your gf an acceptable engagement ring and although i think that you're jumping into marrying her quite quickly (though this has nothing to do with this particular thread), i think that it's a bit lame of you to WANT to buy a blood diamond (although many have already said in here it's virtually impossible to know whether or not it is - unless of course you work for debeers or you're part of the trading in the 1st tier). many of the people who do mine for diamonds have no choice - it's a bit of a retarded comparison with patriotism and dying for your country...they're dying cause they were probably held at gun point to help mine for these diamonds.

well whatever floats your boat really.

you're in china right? cheap diamonds can be found in hong kong or beijing...just buy a diamond by itself with a certificate and then buy a cheap setting.

i'm actually not really fond of diamonds, but my sister and mother are. throughout my life i've heard them talking about clarity, cut and colour along with what the price range should be, where to get good deals on a legit diamond with certificate, etc, etc...i also have some diamond dealers in my family.

sometimes i have to hear my sister yap about jewelry  now SHES decked out with diamonds...i think on her body she wears about 10 karats in total. too extravagant and retarded in my opinion but whatever floats her boat.

Well, it's not that I'd want someone to die over the diamond.

I'm not sure. Maybe it's more of I'd rather buy a poor diamond knowing it than buy a poor one thinking it's good.

It's basically my policy to shop for fakes in China, since everything is and if you buy a real thing, it's a fake that costs more. So maybe I kind of carried that over to the diamond.

Diamonds are not overpriced in Hong Kong, but they may switch it out for a glass one, and the prices are supposed to be better in the US. Most diamond sellers make a 100% profit, but this website has been noted for making 30-40%.

Buying diamonds in China is not cheap and it is a big no-no for scams and the like.

I'm going to check the stats... hold on.

-------------------------
These are from Blue Nile, an online store recommended by pretty much everyone for price and quality.

Ok, here's what I picked out.

The ring is a 18 karat white gold ring. The cheapest ones were $300 and this one was one of the most expensive $650 ones (we both liked it best). To get it in platinum was $1200+. I read a lot and decided platinum wasn't a better choice. The width is 2.5mm
http://www.bluenile.com/product_details.asp?filter_id=1&oid=7329

The diamond is as follows. (I'm making comments beside some)

Carat weight: 0.56
Cut: Ideal (Near top of the line, sparkle is my priority)
Color: F ('Colorless')
Clarity: SI1 (Not the best, but no visual imperfections)

Depth %: 61.8%
Table %: 55%
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Medium
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Strong blue (Mmm... blue shiny)
Measurements: 5.29 x 5.33 x 3.28 mm (width is 2x the width of the ring)

OK, I just gave your specs a whirl at an Antwerp diamond house and got this out of it:

Quote:
ROUND SHAPES
0.50ct
F color
SI1 clarity
$2.726/ct
$1.363/stone

So they say the stone alone ought to fetch $1.363 in Antwerp, a tad more as yours is 0.06ct bigger, so lessay $1.500 in Antwerp. The weakest link here would be the SI1 clarity which drags the stone down a bit.

Hehehe actually platinum would be ideal (utterly discoloration-proof and non-alloyed) but with a price difference like that I respect your decision

Is the white gold a Silver/Gold or Palladium/Gold alloy? If the former I advise the latter as Pd/Au would potentially stand the test of time much better, as hopefully your marriage will
Many jewelers in Europe are switching from Ag/Au to Pd/Au for white gold as it's better and needn't be that much more costly.

According to my sources you're not being had on the stone :birthday: but check if indeed the stone has no naked-eye imperfections to speak of. If your SI1 was a generously appraised SI2 it would be a pity of an otherwise impressive stone. On the other hand, for white gold your ring seems a bit high in price.

Oh, woops. Sorry about not posting the diamond's price.
The diamond price is $1,314.00.

As for platinum being ideal.. probably, yes. But even though it doesn't change color, it is hard to repair and it does become a grey color.

The white gold one can change color a bit, but can also be repaired (and color returned) for a very cheap price.

I'm not sure what the alloy is. I've already looked, but I can't find it anywhere on the website.

I agree the ring is expensive, but we liked it best.

Even if it is SI2, they usually shouldn't have visible imperfections. The I grade is when they start showing.

Will buy soon. Got her ring size tonight. Size 5.

I don't think it's wrong if you simply want a blood diamond to express disdain for the regulation of the diamond trade.

Got a better place I can get a diamond like this for a better price?

Fuck though. I just found out that the website doesn't send to China and I can't pay for it to be sent to Canada with a 10% off discount (I didn't mention before). And once it is in Canada, I still have no way to send it here.

If I send it here insured, 20% customs duty. If I send it in some clothes and HOPE it doesn't get lost, no duty but I could be FUCKED. Probably going to go for the later.

Works with drugs (not my experience), easier with a diamond.

What I meant was.

The American site offers coupon usage. The Canadian one doesn't. The American site only allows orders from within America.

Once I order from the more expensive Canadian site (prices as posted here) then I have to pay shipping in Canada (American site offers free) then I have to send it to China and pay that shipping, and possibly insurance and duty if I didn't want to risk it.

Man...I'm so lucky that my girl doesn't dig diamonds!

They are a total waste of money, if you ask me (or her). Much better spending your money on something that has real scarcity.

Blood diamonds aka Conflict diamonds.

Basically a few countries in West Africa are funding their civil wars using money made from slaving poor locals and kids in diamond mines.

Without the money these despots make from the diamonds they would not be able to finance their war and hundreds of thousands of people would not die. The money goes straight to buying guns, ammo, mines and crack for the 9 year old kiddie soldiers.

You're basically saving money and paying the difference in dead African kids.

You don't know this. They are bad people and will find ways to kill each other if you buy the diamond or not. If they don't have guns they just use machetes, which I think would be worse. You can't stop evil people from making evil decisions, it's just not your battle.

In a previous post...i said that you can get good deals on diamonds from beijng or hong kong. if you're worried like you said about people switching it with glass, then take precautionary measures in ensuring you get a legit diamond...even doing a simple test like scratching it against glass or checking under a magnifying loop can ensure you get a real diamond.

there is somewhat a "diamond district" within the jewelry district in hong kong. take your initiative on finding a place where the dealers won't screw you over. but usually if they offer a certificate with the stone you purchase, then it's for sure legit

I'd go with what BoO says 100%. If she says you're getting ripped off, you probably are.

20% customs duty.. wow :frown: Get a real one in Hong Kong like BoO said. As to customs duty, the finger of a rubber glove comes to mind.

If a blood diamond strikes you as romantic, you might as well do the blood diamond thing, and that's put the diamond in the finger of a rubber glove, tie it to a tiny package, swallowing it in the midst of a small no-fat meal and popping an Imodium on the way to the airport.

You don't have to tell your wife that you retrieved her shiny gem from your own poo after the flight, but it's a far more romantic thought to have gone to these lengths to get your love a 20% better diamond, than to have gotten 20% off on a conflict diamond tainted by the misery of others.

If I was your wife I'd find it romantic you did that for me :yesnod:

A tiny rubber package with a 0.5 carat diamond inside? You might as well challenge them to x-ray you on the airport, it will go entirely unnoticed.

You could take a million dollars anywhere in the world by popping some carat pills
