Waterlogged/fuzzy cakes saveable?
    #775272 - 07/25/02 06:30 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I'm growing shrooms for the first time. I'm using the poor man's terranium and on 7/17 I birthed two cakes onto cut out pieces of cardboard covered in tinfoil. On 7/20 I birthed 6 more, however due to laziness I didn't cover the cardboard in tinfoil. So far the two earlier birthed ones are pinning and growing nicely. However the other six have become very fuzzy and spongelike in appearance(I'll try to post pics in the future). So today I remove the cakes, patted them down with a paper towel and replaced the soaked pieces of cardboard with new pieces covered in tinfoil. Is there any chance pins will be able to form or do you think 5 days was too long and all growth has been stopped? The fuzzy/spongey part is focused on the bottom 1/4, 1/3 of the cakes and I fan at least 3x a day. I did a search on waterlog(ged) and all I found was waterlogged jars and people explaining how it comes about(sitting directly on the perlite). Any help would be greatly appreciated, hopefully I haven't lost these suckers.

You'll probably be fine but your flushes may suffer if the cake is truely water logged.
Allow more time for these cakes to pin
which strain are you using?

Some of the stropharia cakes I birthed a few days ago are growing some fuzzy mycelium projections that look kinda like mini cotton balls. I've heard this is from a humidity problem but some say too high and some say too low. My hygro says the rh is 96% so what's the problem here?

No problem that happens. It will not effenct growth or yeild!
Make sure to let them get air once or twice a day and give em light and they'll be fine
Some cubie strains do this more frequently than others for me...
